Would you pay for this service?
A little background...my parents needed a new PC because theirs was about 5 years old and very slow. They wanted to upgrade it, but were afraid to because they didn't want to lose all their stuff, and they also didn't know how to do it.
I work with computers, so of course I did it for them. I made sure all their documents/pictures/favorites were transferred to the new PC and I picked out the PC that would suit their needs. I disconnected the old one and set up the new one.
On to my question...my mom said a lot of people are probably in the same position and would like to upgrade, but don't know how and don't have someone to do it for them. It got me thinking. Would people pay for this service? What would be a fair price to pay someone to do this? Does anyone currently do this a side business? Any help or comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If DH did not know how to do this (which he is doing right now actually with my laptop), I would pay for that service most definitely.

Not being silly, but isn't that what Geek Squad does? If not, then this is a service I would consider paying for.

Yes, Geek Squad does this..... for $$$$$
I'm sure a lot of people would be very happy to pay an individual to do it for them.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
I think there would be a specific market for that type of service- people our age and younger wont do it- but people your parents age and older are definitely good candidates

Personally I wouldn't, but that's because I know what I'm doing. My co-worker does this on the side though and makes some easy money!

Re: Would you pay for this service?
Yes, people pay all the time for this service.
Most places that sell computers do offer this service. Best Buy being one of them.
It's anywhere between $150 (for someone doing it as a side job) to $250 depending on what needs to be done.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
Personally, I wouldn't, since I did the same thing for my dad recently. However, this is definitely something that people would pay for. Apple I think charges $100 for it...but it may be even more than that.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
Sure-a lot of people would. Some folks are just no tech savvy and don't have a kid who can help them.

My IT dept. does this for free, but if they didn't, I would pay for it bc computers are like latin to me.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
I know a bunch of people who do stuff like that as a side job, so I'd say yes, plenty of people would pay for a service like that. I don't know what they charge though, because DH is pretty good with the computer himself so we've never had to consider it.

My husband is the IT director of his company, so I have my own personal computer expert here. However, he has been paid by others to help them do just what you described. There is a market for it.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
From the other side of the convo - I know how to do it and people have asked me to do it for them and that they will pay me.
I decline. It always turns into 'you touched my computer, you broke it, you fix it' even if it has nothing to do with what you did. Once you touch a persons computer - it's always your fault.
I plug in a printer and dont touch the computer or the keyboard so there is no way I could have done anything - yet somehow I broke their internet explorer.
Not worth it to me.

Re: Would you pay for this service?
We just had someone come do something similar with DH's desktop computer. It was old and we needed some help getting it running better. I'm a librarian so I asked one of our IT guys there. I told him we would pay him. He came over, spent over an hour, got it running great and wouldn't take any $$$, so we gave him giftcards to Barnes & Noble and a restaurant out here we have. I do think there is a market for this, but don't know how/where you would get your business/advertise.
