Would you... (pool related safety question)
Would you let your preschooler who doesn't swim play in a pool by themselves with you watching but not inside if they were wearing an approved life vest/puddle jumper? Or would you only allow them to swim around/play if you were within hands reach of them inside the pool despite the fact that they have a puddle jumper

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
yes I let DD play all the time without me being in the pool at my parents. they have an above ground pool.
I just sit right there watching her so if something is to happen I can go right in clothes in all if I have too.

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
I let her in with the puddle jump if I am sitting on the steps of the pool or the edge. I feel very confident in the puddle jumper, but now reading the above post I am like
How did it pop? How does that happen?

I may be overprotective but arms reach. The time to overturn and take a deep breath? One breath vs two or more inhalations of water. It takes seconds. Plus it takes more time if they are tangled in the puddle jumper. The quicker you get them the better.
DD was in a puddle jumper when spontaneously it popped and she slid in the water. No thrashing or splashing, just under. We got her within a second of going under because we were in arms reach. It still took that second for her to go under. I can't even think about it.
It popped?? Jeez. My puddle jumper is foam inside, not air. And the arm bands are separate too.

Yeah I was going to say, this isn't air filled like a water wing. I don't know how it can pop. It's like a life vest Are we talking about the same thing?

We definitely allow this. We're in Florida right now and let ds play in the pool while we watch from our chairs.

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
My 3 & 4 year olds are in pools with swimmies (only on arms) often. The 4 year old just learned to swim (but he's still a "weak" swimmer). The 3 year old can also stay afloat for a bit if need be (like a popped swimmie).
We stay close and sober... No issues. Wouldn't let them out of sight or easy access, but I feel comfortable being outside the pool watching.
Honestly, I think baby pools are more dangerous because people let their guard down & eyes off.

Would you... (pool related safety question)
I grew up in pools, public, and my mom/grandmother was not always near me. DS will be the same way. I think as long as you are on the pools edge.... how deep is the pool?

NOt sure, its a family members pool but def not shallow enough for DD to stand. We will be spending some time around this pool this summer and I am trying to figure out what the best /realistic method of safety will be.. I think I am ok with her being in a puddle jumper in the pool without me physically in the pool with her as long as my husband and I are right outside the pool with a constant eye on her the entire time. I don't think I am ok with her being in the pool and 'hanging out' if there is not a constant eye on her even with the puddle jumper- I just feel like anything can happen-- accidently can come off, flip, face in the water. Im also nervous about her being around the pool area without her puddle jumper on.. I usually take it off when she comes out of the water to play outside bc i know they are annoying to wear but the kids keep going in and out of the pool (its above ground) and I can totally see DD who is 3 yo running after one of the older kids and trying to go in the pool forgetting that she doenst have a puddle jumper on- there is a gate to the pool but with kids and adlts in and out it is open left open-- obviously I watch her even when she is playing outside the pool but all it takes is a minute and I have mobile 1 year old to watch too-- I think I will make her wear her puddle jumper the whole time even when out of the water- seems to be the safest option

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
I have a life vest for DD and will be staying with my family who has a big pool for a little over a week this summer. If I'm not actually IN the pool with her (which knowing me, I would be), then I will at least be NEAR the pool. Meaning if she slipped, it would take a mere second to jump in & get her. I'd never go inside and just watch from a window or anything no matter what kind of 'protection' she has on. Anything can happen in a split second. Not worth the risk with young ones who can't properly swim yet.

I was unsure about this too. Yesterday we were at a pool party and I kept drumming it in her head no puddle jumper no water. She didn't take it off all day. She kept going into the pool and we kept an eye on her when I wasn't in there as well.

Would you... (pool related safety question)
An inground pool that is easy to jump into just in case, maybe. An above ground pool that needs a ladder to climb up into, no.

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
with the vest or puddle jumper on yes - but I'm always RIGHT there.
There's not much i'm a crazed psychotic lunatic about - but I have an extreme fear of drowning.

It sounds reasonable. If you are spending time at this pool this summer, it might be worthwhile to get DD lessons soon.

Yes, but I am sitting on the step, the pools edge or in a seat right by the pools edge. I can jump in in a split second.

I'm not sure what brand but the arms were foam and the body part was both foam and part inflated. So when the inflated part popped(well really a very fast leak, not a pop like a ballon) she slipped down wih her arms in the air. It was well used over the years so it just gave. If it is all foam I would think it's much safer.
Yeah it def wasn't a puddle jumper. Puddle jumpers are actually coast guard rated. Still very scary though!

Re: Would you... (pool related safety question)
If my kids are in the water, so am I. I had to rescue a child who would have drowned had I not been there. His mom was near the pool talking to a friend and attending to her other child. Her six year old son went into the pool to wash off his flip flop. The flip flop got away from him. He went to reach for it but could not stand where it floated off to. The mom was 3 feet away. Had I not dragged her kid out, he would have died. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. By the time you who are out of the pool realize there is a problem it is too late. Your 30 seconds to jump in is long enough for brain damage or death in a very young child.

Would you... (pool related safety question)
I let her stay in the pool without me- as long as I am watching. When she was younger, it was with a puddle jumper or life jacket, now she is in a tube or swimies. She's had swimming lessons, but can't really swim without assistance. As much as we need to be safe and watch our children, I also think we need to have them feel comfortable in the water. I know that drowning can happen quickly. I've spoken about it with DD- if you go under or get water in your face/eyes/mouth, whatever- do not panic...call me for help, etc. She's 5, but I've been letting this happen for 2 years. Someone is always watching and ready to jump in if needed.

what age?
3, 4 - no way, they would have to be within arms reach by almost 5 and up, i'd probably start to relax a little.
