No, I would want a pediatrician that treats all kids until they have to go to an OB/GYN or internist.

A good pediatrician is very important to me and I want my kids to grow with the practice also. Finding a good one is hard enough without having to think that in a short 5 years, you'll be on the search once again.

No. Then you have to go and find a new one all over again.

Depending on your kid's ages, you might have to deal with 2 different drs. It seems an unnecessary complication. JMO.

That seems like the only drawback to me ...

I like that they are more "current" with issues that pertain to infants and toddlers: autism concerns, vaccines, even "behavioral" things like sleep schedules, feeding issues, temper tantrums, discipline, etc.

My NY pediatric group was just as current with all the issues that you just mentioned. Chat Icon

Any good pediatrician should be current with the issues. A drawback would be that some pediatricians only take newborn new patients. It might be harder to find someone for a 5 year old.

I wouldn't after seeing what my coworker went through with her son. When he was 3 he developed a heart condition and he grew very attached to his pediatrician so much so that when he was 19 and having some issues he wanted to go back to him b/c of the relationship they built. I like the fact that DD's Dr will be with her for a long time.

My DH would prefer someone that we can grow with. I like the idea of a specialist but I do not feel that my pediatrician, who treats children until 18 or so, is lacking in any knowledge. As much as I like someone who specializes, I am not sure it is necessary for a child who is generally healthy.

On the other hand, a ped who see all ages would more quickly spot something that appears in older kids most of the time, but for some reason is showing up in a very young child.

Our ped sees kids up to 18 or so. I wouldn't want to switch after 5 years. You'll lose that history with the first Dr. Our ped will see trends from birth with our DC, and things that may appear normal to a new ped may appear slightly unusual to a ped who as seen them since birth.

I like the fact of having the same Dr until they are 18. They know your kids better then anyone at that point.
