Would you sacrifice yourself for the happiness of others?

Would you put yourself in a position that would make others happy, but may negatively impact you (not life or death)? Would you chose to secure your future even if it meant people may be mad at you?

I have never been so confused in my lifeChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Would you sacrifice yourself for the happiness of others?

It would really depend on the situation: For example, if I was on a life raft with two people and only one life preserver:

1) if i was single and had no children- I'd give up the preserver to someone else without question
2)if i had children, I'd share the preserver and hope for the best for both of us.Chat Icon

If it was a job promotion, I would do what is best for my future regardless of who was ****** off or not. Somebody has to take the job promotion and someone would inevitably be ****** off about it.

It depends on the situation, for how long I would expect to sacrifice myself, etc. I think if you're sacrificing your happiness but every day have to put on a game face it's not going to help anyone. Eventually those emotions are going to come out. Better to be honest about your feelings.

If it was sacrificing my happiness for the well-being of my children, without question I would do it -as long as I didn't develop a martyr complex.

This sounds like 2 different situations. Chat Icon

No, I would not do something just to make someone else happy if it negatively impacted me. Sorry if it sounds selfish, but I wonder if that person or people would do it for me.......
Yes, I would choose to secure my future even if someone might be mad at me. They'll have to get over it, if they don't then they don't truly care about me anyway.

ETA~ I have been in far too many situations where I put other people's happiness first and had nothing but heartache, I won't do it again.

Re: Would you sacrifice yourself for the happiness of others?

Well, I am imagining it to be job related, so I am going to say yes...My husband got a GREAT job...WONDERFUL for our future, but it also meant traveling for two years...WHICH meant me leaving my job...our house...our friends...our family...GUESS WHAT... We leave THIS MONDAY and I so scared... BUT I figure it may be a bit crazy for the next 15 months (since he has already started-we were in CT though, for the first few months) BUT it will benefit us both in the future....

FM if you want to chat!

it would all depend on the situation... in some situations, i might not think twice about the sacrifice, in others, i might laugh at the thought of it.

but, one thing though- your post makes it seems like making the decision would be Absolute. and thats not really how people are... maybe they'd be mad, but people tend to get over things, and maybe you'd be unhappy at first, but you might actually find joy in what you're doing. like i said... its hard to say without knowing the circumstance, but nothing is ever final.
