The Sheraton brand of hotels is offering guests a $5 credit at their restaurants (or 500 SPG points) in exhcnage for opting out of getting their rooms cleaned. The offer is good up to 3 consecutive nights.

This option is part of their "Make a Green Choice" program, to cut back on the soap, water and energy used in daily housekeeping.

Would you do this?

I think I would at least try it, specifically for the points. It's just DH and I traveling, so we don't make a huge mess and I don't care if the bed is made.

I wouldn't bother for the $5 restaurant credit, we hardly every eat there.

Nope. One of the things I like about going to a hotel is having someone else make the bed for me. I always reuse my towels so for me that is not an issue. I just like having someone clean up. The points or $5 is just not worth sacrificing someone's job.

I reuse towels and opt for not changing sheets if they aren't dirty so I don't think I'm adding to the soap/water problem.
I feel like they're trying to cut down on staff and amenities to save money and not so much the environment.

I wouldn't.

I like having someone make my bed, clean the bathroom--IMO it is one of the perks to being away, KWIM? Chat Icon

Hell no! $5 won't even buy you a drink in a hotel bar.Chat Icon

Heck no. If I wanted to clean up after myself and make my own bed, then I can stay home.

For me, part of the fun of a vacation is knowing that someone else is doing the dirty work for you, and you are getting "pampered".

$5 a day at a cruddy hotel restaurant isn't gonna do it.

I would. Ever since people we were vacationing with had their room robbed at a nice hotel, we don't let housekeeping in often anyway.

The thieves went to the room that housekeeping was cleaning and said, "oh excuse me, I just have to get some of my things" and walked out with their stuff.

DH and I usually travel with laptops, etc. so we don't usually let housekeeping in anyway.

$5 is too little, but maybe $10 per day?

When I travel for work I usually don't let housekeeping in. It's just easier not having to put all my stuff away everyday.

I agree that $5 is way too little...$15 would be fair in my opinion.

One of the things I really like about staying in hotels is coming back to a clean room and bathroom that I didn't have to lift a finger for. I don't think that $5 is a big enough savings to make it worth it to give up housekeeping.

i don't think so... the last couple hotels i stayed in have notes all over the place to "hang up your towel if you want to reuse it" or " put this on the bed if its ok to not change your sheets"... and i always do that, so i don't think i'm contributing to the water and soap problem. If they take them, its not my fault! LOL
i LOVE having someone else make the bed and wipe down the bathroom everyday though!

No way - that's one of the best parts of a hotel stay - someone to clean up after you for a change !!

LOL...my thoughts exactly!
Going green is nice but I want my bed made. $5 would cover squat ina restaurant. Now if they offered lets say a free nite or 2 that might be worth my while. : )

Re: Would you take a $5 credit at your hotel's restaurants in exchange for opting out of housekeeping?

Everyone seems totally against this but I did it while traveling for business at a NICE sheraton in Seattle and used all my $5 gift cards at the coffee shop each morning. I really didn't mind not having the room "cleaned" as it hardly gets dirty from just me anyway, and in exchange I was able to get muffins and stuff every morning. I would definitely do it again! Every $5 helps! Chat Icon
