would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
my little cousin is graduating hs this year...she wants to become a teacher or an ot. She asked my opinion and i told her how there is no teaching jobs and all the budget cuts will make it worse. I dont know how it will be when she graduates. If you were here what would you do? i wanted to get a teachers perspective cause im sure you all know better about the job market then an outsider

Yes I would, and have. It is not the job people think it is.

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
Do you think she would be a good teacher?
If so I really wouldn't say NOT to do it, but make sure she is aware of the reality of the sitauation in terms of jobs. We will still need good teachers

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
I wouldn't tell her not to be a teacher, if that's what she really wants to be. But it definitely would be a good idea to fill her in on how difficult it is to get (and keep) a teaching job on L.I. right now to help her make her decision. There are so many people currently trying to find teaching jobs, and no districts are hiring. Also, because of budget cuts, I'm hearing of a lot of teachers being excessed for next year.

If she really wants to be a teacher, I wouldn't tell her not to. There are lots of perks, though you take the good with the bad (like any job, really)
Perhaps she can choose a specialty like special ed or math/science. I think math/science is high need these days. Although it's tough out there getting a job, it's not impossible.

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
i post this every time a question like this comes up... but tell her to look into speech therapy i work as a speech therapist in an elementary school... its kind of a combination of the education and the OT that shes interested in i LOVE my job! i have the school schedule, but don't have a whole class full of kids at once. i see them in groups of 3 or 4. AND i don't just work on correcting lisps or problems with the "R" sound. I also work with special education students on language skills ( explaing how things are the same/different, reading comprehension, following multi step directions, describing objects, vocabuarly, etc, etc, etc). So theres a lot of education/teaching type stuff involved. PLUS it would offer more options for her than teaching would. if she doesnt like the school setting, she can work in a hospital, rehab center, nursing home, or in Early Intervention with the really cute little preschool aged kids. And the job market is GREAT right now- i work full time, but still get e-mails from contracting agencies looking to hire more speech therapists. just another option to give her Out of her two options though, i definitely think the job market is better for OT right now...

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
i would never tell someone not to follow their dreams because *i* think there are no jobs. there ARE jobs--you just have to find them. and who's to say she wouldn't move out of state and get reciprocity?
my dreams are mine, hers are hers. it's good to inform her that it's difficult to get a job now, but let her make her own choices without influincing them.

Absolutely not. If someone wants to be a teacher, they should follow their dream! Sure, there are fewer jobs now than there have been in the past....but that doesn't mean there are no jobs anywhere! Each year, I hear about how there are no jobs anywhere....and each year, there are new teachers hired in my school.

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
If I knew someone who wanted to do lets say Elem Ed I would tell them to get certified in more than Elem Ed but I would also tell them how hard it is to get a job.

This is true. Every single year they say there is no jobs, but at the last minute there are.

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
I wouldn't tell them not to be a teacher. I would advise them to seek certification in an area where there is a need (math, sci, LOTE, sp ed) and invite them to visit my school. I'd also be honest about the amount of work I do because I know some people believe it's such an "easy" job and that all teachers leave at 3 which for me is not the case.

No, I don't think I would tell someone to NOT be a teacher, but I would be honest about what they should do to better their chances of getting a job after school, ie, dual certification, certification in a high need subject, etc., etc.

Same here. I like teaching and would not want to deter someone who truly wanted to get into the profession. Granted I believe this year it will be even harder to find a job than it has been in the past. With the governor's proposed cuts, my school is losing millions of dollars and layoffs are going to happen again.

I do too, to some extent. I don't know that I'd say flat out not to do it, but I would caution her to do LOTS of research. I think that things are going to be changing a lot in the coming years, especially if Obama does 2 terms. I feel that there is a lot of backlash against unions and teacher salaries and benefits, with all the struggles the economy is experiencing (never mind the lack of jobs) and I am feeling more and more that I am not just expected to be a teacher- I am expected to parent these kids as well. It is never-ending and the amount of work that is expected of us is growing. Now that Randi Weingarten is the AFT president I think we can expect to see serious changes to tenure, pay-for-performance and evaluations tied to test scores. It is no longer as much of a family-friendly profession.
Sorry that this got ranty. I shoud add that I teach in a high-needs urban school so my experience is likely going to be VERY different from someone in a better school. But at the same time, I feel that everyone going into the profession needs to be aware that if he/she wants to teach, it might be in a school like mine and while some of our challenges are unique, I think we are also going through other things that all teacher deal with.

No! just because times are tough i wouldnt crush someones dreams (if this is something she really wants) when she graduates, things could be different and if they arent tere are other avenues she can look into. there is private work, tutoring ...

Re: would you tell someone not to be a teacher....
I would not.
When I went for my masters in School Counseling quite a few people told me "Oh no go for teaching--you will never get a job".
It bothered me bc it was what I wanted to do.
I got a job for my internship--before I even graduated!
I think that so many people telling me how hard it was to get a job was GOOD bc it really motivated me to try as soon as I had enough credits and to take a less desireable school/area just to get my foot in the door. So, YES I would certaintly be honest with the fact that it is a tough time and you may have to start somewhere you do not want to (ie: private school if DOE still has a freeze).
But I would still encourage them to go for the career they want. People retire, leave to have children--there will not always be a freeze kwim?

I think this is the best point. And didn't you say she was graduating from high school this year? That's FOUR years before she has to worry about finding a job. Who knows how many teachers might be retiring at that point anyway. I'd never tell someone not to teach, but that's because I, personally, love it too much and think that if there's a will, there's a way. If someone WANTS to do it... well, that's the kind of person I'D want doing it.
