Would you want to be the best looking house on the block?
Or would you want your house to be on par with those around it?

On par...if my house is the best looking then I am either in a neighborhood that is not maintaining their homes or I am in a house way beneath my means.
I think that having a house equal or maybe a little better than most in the neighborhood is optimal.

After our house project this year, our house will be bigger than most of the neighbors, but definitely not the biggest. Nicer looking than most, but not the nicest.

I think everyone should strive to be the best looking house on the block. That way, all of your neighbors are on par and have a well maintained look.
That's up to interpretation though - what I think is best is not over the top. Not a huge mansion with hardscape everywhere. Meticulously maintained topiary all over the place.
I am proud of where I live and want to make my house & yard the best it can be, but tastefully so.

I totally agree... I learned a very valuable lesson when I was growing up....our neighbor had a house fire that distroyed the house. It had to be rebuilt so they rebuilt it and put so much money into it...thinking this was going to be the last house they owned they made it their dram home...all the newest moder conviencenes...well fast forward 3 years, they are getting a divorce and now they have over priced the house for the neighborhood. Pick up the house and they could have gotten (back in the '80's) about $60k more but because the neighborhood didnt call for such an extrangent house...they had to take a loss...

Re: Would you want to be the best looking house on the block?
DH & I strive to make our house look beautiful & by some means, I believe it has more curb appeal then others on our block. We try to make our house the best looking as we possibly can without going over the top & investing what we know we can't get back. We are in our house for the long run, so I am sure over time we will drop more $$ into it. Eventually we will make our money back or even more. For the time being though, I enjoy pulling into my driveway on a day to day basis & smiling bc of our hardwork & seeing how beautiful our house looks from the outside.
Just the other day DH & I were discussing the other houses on our block. Everyone on our block makes sure their house is well kept & lanscaped nicely. Of course there are some nicer then others but that is all dependent on how much $$ people are willing to drop into it.

Depends. If we were looking to sell in the near future, then on par with the other houses, otherwise you would look like you were overpriced for the area. If you were looking to stay there forever, then I would want it to look the best on the block.

Well said! I agree completely with Greenfreak.
On our block there are house that are nicely maintained but not over the top at all. But there are houses on the block that need a lot of maintainance and we have seen them improving those homes since we bought the house. We bought our house from people that no one wanted to live next door to anymore. DH & I are going to try, within our means, to make our house blend in with the neighborhood. It's still going to take some work, but I wouldn't want to be the best looking house on the block, just the best that DH & I can make it, so we are proud when we pull up to our house everyday. I love looking at our hard work that we have already done.

Re: Would you want to be the best looking house on the block?
I would love to think our house is the nicest looking on our block of very nice looking houses.
When we are working outside it's lovely to hear compliments from people walking by who know what the house looked like before we moved in. We put in loads of flowers and definitely try to make it look outstanding.

Re: Would you want to be the best looking house on the block?
When we bought all homes on my block were on par..old and needing work. We since redid everything....
Now my house is the nicest on the block for sure. Not the nicest in the neighborhood though, so it works. Since we bought here, almost every other home on our block has sold and people have done so renovations so I hope I won't be the nicest house on the block hopefully soon.
I had a few neighbors make "comments" about having to do work since we did work b/c now their home looks "worse"...so maybe in some cases it sparks people to renovate if they have the $?
With that being said, my next home I would rather start out as the worst home on a block that has mostly been renovated, so I can improve and then be on par with the rest.

Re: Would you want to be the best looking house on the block?
i think we are somewhere in the middle- and i like it that way. like somebody else said, you just never know when you might have to selll your house. so even if you plan on staying there forever and put tons of money into it, you could end up overpricing it if you have to sell quickly. ours is nice enough that i feel proud to pull up to it everyday, without it being "too much" for the neighborhood we're in...
