Wow - we think we have problems with strangers saying things around here!
I just got off the phone with a woman I was interviewing who lives in Texas. I am working on a book and interviewing moms of children on the autism spectrum, and found her though an autism chat room.
Her son is 4.5, 50 lbs, etc - and needs to use a harness (you know - the controvertial leash) when he is in public because he bolts so fast, has no awareness of danger, etc, that it needs to be done for his safety. (BTW - bear this in mind when you see a kid too big for a harness, a binky, a stroller, a bottle, etc)
This child was in walmart with his grandmother, and a man came up to her and asked "Hey - did your kid get a rabies shot to go with his leash?"
 
I said to the mom, "He said WHAT????????!!!!????"
She laughed and said, "Oh yeah, this is Texas - he was a big ol dumb redneck!"
I was so floored by this.
She said he was lucky she wasn't out with him that day.
Can you even imagine??????

This mom was one of the most amazing and fascinating moms I ever spoke to. She took it in stride and knew it came from a place of ignorance. So horrible though!!!!
