Wow- how did I NOT know this about car seats?
Most car seats expire 6 years after the date they are manufactured.
I just looked at my older DD's seat, and it has been expired for a year . My younger DD's expires next year. I had no idea I was driving around with her in an unsafe seat. Please, check your seats. If you've borrowed them, check them.
Here is an article about it. Milk has an expiration date and so does your car seat!

It has been mentioned on a few car seat threads in here. I often bring it up when I respond to threads. All seats have their date of manufacture stamped on them.
Britax expirations are 9 years from date of manufacture. Not sure about other brands, but it's definitely a good idea to check.
That's another reason why I wasn't concerned that DC's Britax Boulevards didn't convert to a booster seat. DS is in a new booster seat at 6yo, so he would quite likely hit the expiration date on the Britax before he's done with a booster seat.

I always wondered this because it does come up on here. I knew that the infant carrier I had (peg perego) expired 5 years from the manufacture date.
It's also good to know that the Britax carseats are good for 9 years.

I usually go with the rule of 5 years for all baby gear.

The plastic degrades (like all plastic does), and it loses it's structural integrity. It doesn't fall apart on that date, and it's possible it's still good for more years, but most likely, it's not as strong as it was before the date, and it could potentially put DC at risk, and the only way to find out how safe the seat is, is to either be in an accident, or send it to a lab to do a detailed structural analysis.

I've heard it's 5 years OR 3 children... which is why my girlfriend bought a new car seat when she had her 4th DC.

You shouldn't go by # of children, because it doesn't reflect the age of the seat. DW is about 12 years younger than her oldest brother, so if you used that equation, the seat would be extremely old!
I would go by what the manufacturer states, and not use a "rule of thumb" that was passed down. The manufacturer has done testing, and knows what their seats can do, and how long they can last.

I was just adding that because sometimes 3 children can happen in less than 5 years as was the case with my friend. Obviously the other way around is more than 5 years...
