Writing their name..
Is your child writing their nickname or birth name in preschool/school?
I've been thinking about having DS write Joseph instead of Joey. Does it matter, does school prefer birth name or nickname?

Re: Writing their name..
I would start out having him write his birth name. I didn't have to worry about it with my son, but my daughter has a nickname that we use just as much as her birth name. When the time comes for her to start writing her name, I plan to teach her to write her birth name first. When my son was in preschool, they taught all the kids to write their birth names.

Writing their name..
Definitely the birth name. Only because I know when children start kindergarten they teach them how to write their birth name not their nickname.
My niece is Isabella and her daycare taught her how to write Bella, my sister had to tell them to teach her how to write Isabella even though they called her Bella. My niece had to adjust a little but it was better in the long run when she started kindergarten.
I taught my son how to write Alex when we used to call him AJ and had to explain nickname versus his whole name or what he called real name. Then at the last minute we decided to change his name to Ajay and get rid of Alex at the adoption. Totally threw him off but he got used to writing it and calls it his new name. Now in kindergarten he can write Ajay and just says it is his new name. LOL.
In summary teach him Joseph its better in the long and just explain to him the difference. He will understand eventually.
