Written report cards?

I keep reading comments that sound like people get written reports, progress reports. At our school we have two teacher parent conferences -Nov and March. Our report card has no writing. Just categories and levels (1-4 and 3 levels of effort). Is this unusual? I figured this was typical. Then I am seeing people write about teacher comments. This is for K and 1st grades.

My DS has comments on his, in k and now in 1st. They're actually typed on a label bc the teacher said her hand writing isn't neat enough

Ours have letters (not A, B, C....but something like S, A, I ....etc....) and comments from the teacher in various categories.

Rating of 1-4 for the categories.

There is a summary comment paragraph typed by the teacher.

All report cards are on-line. None are mailed.
Districts went on-line because costs to print and mail paper report cards (and all other mailings) were costing districts tens of thousands of dollars a year.

I prefer the on-line versions. Especially love the on-line lesson plan for the week.

In our school it's all grouped- reading, writing, math, "behaviors that support learning", etc. At the end of each section the teachers can put in a couple lines of comments. I find them helpful even though they're brief.

Where I teach, we do not have any comments on report cards and use a 1-4 grading system. If parents have questions for the special teachers, they are encouraged to contact them individually. My DD's school is different, with no specials grades at all (k-2) and a short comments section.

We have a similar report card except there I also a section for the teacher to write comments.

We have parent teacher conferences 2x a year and report cards are given quarterly. They are also on a 1-4 grade scale. Additional subjects like gym, music, art, spanish give letter grades O, G, S, N, U.

4= Exceeding Standard
3 = Meeting Standard
2 = Approaching Standard
1 = Not Meeting Standard

They are assessed in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Fine Motor Skills, Work Habits and Study Skills.

At the first marking period they even send home a letter saying no child will receive a 4 for the first marking period and you should expect to see mostly 2s with some 3s as your child is still learning 1st grade work. The second marking period they can give out 4s.

There is an area for comments. For this marking period DS got an O in gym. The gym teacher commented that DS was the most improved student in the class and said great work. He used to not be able to catch a ball, but we worked a lot on it and now he can do it and even pitch a ball to himself and hit it. He had to work really hard on it.

There are comments typed onto the computerized report cards that are from the teacher. This is where for me most value is placed. It tells you the areas the teacher feels they are doing well and the areas that will be worked on for the time period. The rest of the report card is areas broken down pretty much on a 1-4 scale. In their specials (gym, art, music, Spanish, etc) there is a space for a 2-3 word typed comment from that teacher after their number grades.

We have to sign off on each day's status. She sends it home in their book. She also makes notes for things that may need noting. Like anything below "ready to learn" and anything above Great Job. We have ONE parent/teacher meeting mandatory. if your child is on course they will not schedule a second. However you can request one when the second parent/teacher timing comes up. They sent home a note to each parent and told them of their child's status.

Her report card has a box that allows for teacher's comments and she always puts something in there. We have 4 nine week periods. Otherwise is generally + .. - or .. / for developed, needs developing or currently learning. Then there's lots of other scales on her report card for this or that. slightly mind numbing!

She also has our emails and we correspond I'd say once a month. Mostly me reaching out to her. It was more in the beginning but we keep up contact.

Teacher is also supposed to maintain a blog but she doesn't. LOL which is fine.

We get weekly newsletters with one page telling us what authors they are working on, what mathematics, science and literary principles are being introduced, as well as what their 'popcorn' word for the week will be.

Honestly I get so much crap from school its slightly annoying but then again, I remember it can't hurt.
