WTF I cannot make consomme rice!!!

I followed this recipe:

Brown rice and chopped onion in butter in heavy frying pan. Add consomme, pepper, and mushrooms. Bake at 350 degrees until consomme is absorbed, over an hour.

After 2 hours ( I was checking and stirring and nothing was cooking) it was burnt and the rice wasn't even cooked, what gives?????

Does anyone have a good recipe that actually works??

Was it brown rice or did you brown white rice?

What was your ratio of rice to consomme?

The recipe said to brown the onions and rice, then add the consomme.

It was brown rice. It was 1 cup of rice to 2 cans of consomme....

Hrmm... I am thinking the oven wasn't at a good temp possibly? I think the problem MAY have been the brown rice. It doesn't really puff the way white rice does and generally requires a little more time and liquid. I'd try again using white rice - and when you toast it in the butter you really want it to be more LIGHTLY toasted rather than dark golden or brown. Almost like a yellow color.

I've never done it with brown rice... but I would imagine you would need to use more liquid to make that work and cook it for longer.

I have never made rice like you mentioned but I would try and soak the brown rice in water for an hour first and then go ahead and make the recipe.
I was watching a cooking show and they recommended this method to help break down the outer shell.

In general when I make brown rice it never really gets fluffy like white rice.

One more thing.. DO NOT TOUCH IT once you put it in the oven. You don't want to screw with the temperature by continually going in there and stirring or anything. Just do a stir when it comes to temp on the stovetop.. then stick it in the oven and let it do it's magic on it's own!
