WTH is wrong with my car? I want to cry!
In 2007 I spent over $4K on car repairs... new alternator (finally, after YEARS of battery problems and chaging the fuse box of all things), new muffler, new catalytic converter, new air pump and timing belt, brakes, steering, you name it. Now the check engine light is going on and off and this morning the damn thing wouldn't start. Now obvviously my boss is pizzed that I'm not coming in (mostly I think because my co-worker ruins it for me by taking off when she's hungover or has BF issues).... but anyway. I'm so frustrated with this car!

I think it's time for you to consider getting a new car. Four thousand dollars is a lot of money to put into a car.

That's awful! Sorry!
You put more money into the car last year than you could have paid in car payments on a new car. If this car is paid off, I think I'd consider shopping for a new car!

It's a 2000 VW Bug. I figured the $4K would be worth it since it was fixing SO much and hopefully I could get 5 more years out of it. I can't have it just randomly not start. It's not THAT cold out.

Both VW and Audi were notorious for electrical issues around 2k. I would try and trade it in. You might just keep having issues turn up with that car.

Yep. I think fromm '98-'03 there were elec problems. I thought changed the alternator and fise box would fix it. Now I spent so much money on it I don't think it's worth trading it in at this point. Plus I can't afford car payments. I basically emptied my savings and charged up several credit cards fixing my car last year. I had worked so hard paying them down and now they are maxxed. If I had to come up with that at $300 a month I wouldn't have been able to do it and now I definitely can't. If my car needs work again I literally cannot pay for it, since my credit cards are almost maxxed

Re: WTH is wrong with my car? I want to cry!
Just a thought, go get some gas, and close your gas cap REALLY snuggly. Then go home and if you still have a CEL (Check engine Light) disconnect your battery. Give it a half hour and reconnect. It’s a pain I know, but it will eliminate the most common cause of CEL which is Gas Caps. The EPA put stronger requirements on cars and 1999-2004 most cars are stupidly sensitive to the gas cap (I know I got a 2003 myself).
Still you should not have problems starting your car. We had this issue with my hubby’s old Tiburon. First it was a drive shaft stall (my truck does this from time to time) the second time it was an unnamable electronic issue. It never went a way. At the end of the lease we got my Mazda 6 and have been happy since.
Sounds like you’ve practically had your 60K tune up. I’d say there’s some serious issues going on.

Well I'd do that if it would START. It's dead in the garage.
I know about the gas cap issue, that was a big problem for me for awhile.
I just did have the full 60K service done. What's funny is that after $4k the ONE problem I went in complaining about was not fixed.

Did you get a notice from VW about the cat converter? I have a 2002 Jetta replaced my cat and then got a notice there was a defect so they reimbursed me for the repairs.... Not sure if it applies to the bug too!

No, I didn't, but it was partially covered by my extended warranty. My cat had to be defective, it apparently was broken in pieces inside. That's not normal wear and tear. My car only has like 64K miles on it

If the lights and radio work, maybe it's the starter. Even if you replaced it, it can happen again. I went through three before I got a good one. Good luck.

could be the battery. On cold days, Al would have to jump his battery (thankfully he just bought a new battery this weekend to solve the problem).

i knew it was a VW before u even stated it. today's vw's start having major probs once they hit 40,000 - 45,0000 miles. how many miles do u have? time to move on ~~ honda's last forever....... think about switiching if u want a car that lasts
