WWYD - New Car Shopping

DH & I have been on the hunt for a new car for me. We found a car we agree on. The price was a bit more than we can afford right now. The sales guy said there were no incentives on the model and not much he could do about the price.

After we got home I decided to look at the dealer home page. I found the car and it has an MSRP of $1K LESS than what the guy quoted me, AND, that price is in red with a big line through it. There are other cars on the dealer website in red with a line through it. Some, but not all, of those then have a sale price listed. The sale price, if given, is about $2K less than the "original" price. IF I could get this car for $3K less than quoted the payments would come in UNDER what I'm shooting for.

Do I:
A) call the sales guy and ask what the real deal is?
B) go back to the dealer and ask what the heck his problem is and why he lied about the price of the car
C) go to another dealer and see what they can do for me (the only other dealer showing this model in stock is in Nassau County, I'm in Eastern Suffolk)
D) forget about this car and look at other brands that I haven't checked out yet?

Re: WWYD - New Car Shopping

First of all, MSRP? No way.

You go in there in person and deal with either the salesman or the sales manager. If the salesman is not being helpful - simply go to another one. I switched salesmen mid-deal because the guy didn't want to work with me.

Then, you ask to see the INVOICE of the car. And not the dealer's invoice - the manufacturer's invoice. That is what the car cost Honda, Nissan, whatever to MAKE. You shouldn't have to pay any more than $500 over that price. They don't want to hear it, go to another salesperson and if they still don't want to work with you or you feel they are being shady (not wanting to show you the invoice, talking in circles), go to another dealer.

We went to three different Nissan dealers - and I compared them to each other. I told the guy at Smithtown that Atlantic would do it for _______ and then I inserted what I wanted to pay lol lol. I never even went to Atlantic. He did it, done.

But you have to work with the total price of the car, invoice, not MSRP which is a huge rip-off and then crunch the numbers of that price and break it down monthly.

Don't JUST work with monthly payments because they can hide a lot of money in that. Meaning, you are paying X amount monthly but if you add it up and times it by the amount of months then it comes out to be a lot more than what that invoice price is which means you are overpaying.

HTH! BE TOUGH! In this economy - they should be kissing your feet. Trust me, they need you more than you need them - I don't care WHAT car it is! Chat Icon

It's a sub-compact. Nothing extraordinary.

Re: WWYD - New Car Shopping

There are all sorts of cars selling for over MSRP. Is it a hybrid? Many hybrids sell for big bucks.

Has a "True Market Value" link, that can give you a better approximation as to the cost of a vehicle. It has nothing to do with MSRP, but more on dealer inventories, gas prices, incentives, popularity, etc.

Thanks for the link. Very helpful!! Only one of the cars on my short list is coming up as selling at MSRP - every other car (including the one in question is coming up below).

I would call on the phone. And I just wanted to let you know what often times, the dealer websites are run by third parties, and may not be up to date. But if the advertised car is in stock, you should be able to get it for what its listed as.

Good Luck!

Re: WWYD - New Car Shopping

When DH and I were car shopping I recall the online prices being lower and when DH mentioned this the dealer went on about oh yes online price was lower and he could match it....

Honestly I would go to another dealer.

If the price online was lower obviously the dealer SHOULD be able to give you a better deal and choose not to--I would not give him/her my business!

Re: WWYD - New Car Shopping

The price you are probably looking at - is just the BASE price before destination fees that the manufacturer charges to ship AND without any options - I would call and talk to the salesperson or salesmanager.

Re: WWYD - New Car Shopping

same thing happened to us----we went to the dealership and they told us it was an "internet deal".

Price was good enough for us and we bought it.

I walked out many dealerships before getting my car. I researched the prices & added in $ commission for the dealership - walked in asked if they could sell me a car for that price & walked out when they said they couldn't.

I wouldn't go completely by advertising because I found one dealership added in "fees" that made the car a lot more $$. Also another dealership had the car in stock on the phone & when we got there it was "sold" but had an upgraded model.Chat Icon

I was comparing the base price without the destination fee etc. Like I said, the dealer website has the price crossed off, and for every other car with the price crossed off it then has a lower sale price listed (except of course this one). The online price is $1K less than the price the sales guy started at when I was sitting at his desk.
