WWYD? Personal Information online
I participated in a study ages ago.
When I was googling information, I found the data on me & my family online. Available along with my phone number - which is an easy reverse look up to my address, email address, answers to the questions on the study, my children's names, etc. There were no social security numbers.
I was furious. Emailed the professor of the study & asked her to remove it. When she didn't respond to my first two emails, I sent her an email asking if she isn't the correct person to speak with, should I contact the dean directly.
I received an immediate response (surprise, surprise!) that she has deleted the file (and the cached version too).
I doublechecked and it was deleted.
So here's the question:
She still has over 100 files available online. It doesn't have social security numbers but it does have info on divorces, siblings, kids, email addresses, phone numbers, medical info (cancer, pacemakers) etc.
She knows the files are there & I suppose she isn't planning on doing anything about it.
Would you alert anyone? Let it go?

I would alert someone.....since you didn't want your info online, I'm sure there are others in the same boat, but just don't realize it.

If I were in this situation, I would make sure my own information is gone and not worry about the rest (unless you know someone personally, I would notify them direct).
If the professor knows it's there and deleted ONLY your info but nothing else, chances are she could care less to take the time to get rid of all other info.

I would let it go. If the other people are concerned about their privacy, they will do the same thing you did.

Is it violating the terms of the study for the info to be public? if so then id contact the dean... if not, id let it go!

So would I. Just because she could care less about her client's privacy, doesn't mean she shouldn't be directed to delete the information. I am sure those people don't know it's out there. I, for one, would appreciate it if you did that for me.
I'm so bothered by the general consensus that as long as your info is gone, eff everyone else. What happened to looking out for each other? That's why this world is going to shiiit
