WWYD- student comes late consistently everyday and admin. does nothing
Actually, two students........
I work for the DOE and we have our extended day in the morning. I have 2 students, one who does not show up AT ALL for extended day.. EVER .. and he is doing the worst in my class and needs the help VERY badly! .. Then there's another student who is mandated to come but he shows up 25 mins late when it's almost over.
The one who does not show up at all, just comes to school late.
The other one leaves his house on time so his mom thinks he is coming to school, but instead he hangs out with his friends and gets into trouble. I'm pretty sure he smokes with them, etc, and then comes to class when he feels like it. (this is 8th grade)
The moms of both these students have been called consistently but NOTHING changes and my administration does nothing either. I find it's not fair to the other students who DO come on time and they see that nothing gets done for the ones who don't.
What can I do in this situation? The parents obviously are no help at all and the students don't care about consequences- so if I reward the ones who come on time but not them, they won't care.
What can I do in this situation?

If you REALLY want to play hardball- tell the kids AND the parents you will call ACS because of educational neglect.
Can you take their gym period? I have done this and it works- but my admins are ok with it and the gym teacher does not mind. Or lunch detention?

I will consider both these options, thanks. The only problem with lunch detention is that then I'm forced to watch the kid during my lunch period since there's no designated "detention" room- and then it's like I'm punished too because I like to use that time to get stuff done around the building.
Taking a gym period though....... that could work.... and the ACS idea I definitely like- maybe that will make the moms take this more seriously.
