WWYD...Work related

I'm a preschool teacher and I work with a school calendar so I have holidays and summers off. My baby is due in Aug meaning if I were to go back to work I would have about 4 weeks to be home with my little one. My job doesn't have maternity leave so that's not an oppition.

I have my mother who is willing to watch my baby mon-wed-fri so I can go back part time to work from 7:30-3:30.

My question is ...Do you think 4 weeks is enough time to bond with my baby before returning to work? Or should I just skip going back to work come sept. Money isn't an issue if I don't go back. I love my job to death and would hate to lose my class. If I don't go back part time I would be a sub and be called in when needed. I think I should just take the year off and sub when needed. 4 weeks with my baby then having to go back to work 3 days a week ugh... I'm so confusedChat Icon

I would take all the time you can to bond with your baby, especially if you do not need the money

From a BTDT mom, at 4 weeks, my daughter and I were just getting in a groove and I would hate to have to leave her

I went back to work after 14 weeks Chat Icon

I think 4 weeks is way too short. You may not even feel well enough to go back at that point!

Ok that's what I needed to hear. 4 weeks with an infant and giving birth and getting no sleep. I think your all right... I should just take the time off. I just hate the thought of being replaced at my job and losing my class:(

Re: WWYD...Work related

Since you are not entitled to a maternity leave, don't you get NYS disability? If so, this is 6 weeks (this is what I am doing). I am trying to get my ducks in line bc I am going to see if I can take another 6 weeks working from home, this way we don't have to put the baby in daycare until 12 weeks.

If money was not an issue though, I would talk to work about possibly taking a leave of absence for maybe a month or so & then do the Part-time...I know how difficult it is to leave a job that you love so much, so for me, even though the money is not an issue, I would want to get back into the groove of doing some type of work...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is your company large enough to have to abide by FMLA? If so, they must keep your job for 6-8 weeks (depending on whether c section).

I don't think I could do it after only 4 weeks. I know I would need that time with my newborn and would probably regret it later on if I didn't take that time. If money is not an issue - for me I would wait

This is not true at all.

In NYS, you are LEGALLY disabled for 6 weeks (v birth) or 8 weeks (c section) and you cannot return to work until after that, regardless of maternity leave offered by your job. You receive NYS Disabilty for that time.

FMLA must keep your job for up to TWELVE weeks if you meet the requirements (50+ employees and a certain amount of hours, I believe). Those 12 weeks are inclusive of the weeks mentioned above, but they are unpaid unless your job offers something.

If the money isnt a factor, then i would take the year off from your class and then just sub when you are called

i'm not sure about the NYS laws, but from the above post it sounds like you are entitled to much more time that you think without losing your job.

i agree with the others that 4 weeks isn't enough time to recover from pregnancy and birth and get into a groove with your baby.

first time around i took off 12 weeks and didn't even think that was enough... ended up going back only part time until DS was 9 months old.

i would find out what you are actually entitled to and then make the decision that makes your heart happy

thats why i have. I have FMLA for 12 weeks, and then NYS disability until 6-8 weeks after the baby is born.

4 weeks isnt enough time for u too heal. If u have a section your not going to be cleared to go back to work until 8 weeks.

so am I intitled to Disabilty even if I don't go back and I am just a sub? Or I have to return to work? I'm confused with all thisChat Icon

Are you a sub now or permanent?

Disabilty has to do with the hours you work prior to the baby being born.

To clarify:
As the pp indicated, you are considered disabled for 6 or 8 weeks post partum. However, if your doctor releases you earlier, you can return on whatever date he is comfortable with.

I believe you should be entitled to NYS diability for those weeks your doctor considers you disabled. However, as a teacher you may be covered under a collective bargaining agreement I wouldn't know about.

At 4 weeks, most babies aren't sleeping through the night yet. You could do it but you would be pretty wiped out. If it were me, I'd arrange to go back at 3 months if you can keep your class.

If money weren't an issue I would take more time. This will be our first so I am not speaking from experience but I can't imagine you will want to leave your baby after 4 weeks if you can help it.

I'm permanent but I don't work in the summers. Does that matter? Do you know where I can find more info on all this?
