Re: what was your preconception gyno visit like?
I had the same experience. A prescription for prenatals and very general do's and dont's. Once your pregnancy is confirmed, I would think they would give you a much longer list of specifics.

Re: what was your preconception gyno visit like?
I'm glad you asked this, b/c I had the same experience, but my dr. said OTC prenatals are fine, as long as they have folic acid & don't bother your stomach. She didn't even go thru do's & don'ts & just said if I get pregnant to set up an appt. between 10-12 wks.
Some girls seem like they are getting so much more information/help, support. Am I wrong?

Re: what was your preconception gyno visit like?
mine was the same way. my dr. was like, "start taking a multi-vitamin" and then she asked me if I am Jewish, b/c apparently Jewish girls need to be tested for some condition? but that was it.

Re: what was your preconception gyno visit like?
We went about a month or two before we actively started TTC. I got the basic facts. My doc is the FURTHEST thing from an alarmist. Here is what he said:
He told us first and foremost not to make this process any more scientific than it needed to be when we am first trying. He hasnt recommended a basal body thermometer in over 10 years. He suggested against OPKs. He told us to BD every other day starting at day 10 and if we werent pregnant in 5-6 months, to make another appointment to discuss further options. He told us that with every cycle there is a 10% chance of conception and it is a little lower for older women such as myself. He told me exactly how much folic acid to take 1000mcg (1mg) and then said when I stopped the pill, he would put me on a prenatal (which he did) that had the same amout of folic acid that I was used to taking.
I am Jewish (as is DH) and I had already had genetic testing done before we got married which was certainly before TTC. This is because Jews of Eastern European and Russian descent (Ashkenazi) are known carriers for disorders that are debilitating and often fatal to babies and very young children
This is what my genetic testing looked for:
Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, familial dysautonomia, Niemann-Pick (type A) disease, Fanconi anemia (group C), Bloom syndrome, Gaucher disease (the non-neuronopathic type), mucolipidosis type IV, and glycogen storage disease type 1. They also test for cystic fibrosis because it is often included in an Ashkenazi heritage screening panel, since it occurs with the same frequency in European Jews as in members of the non-Jewish Caucasian population (approximately 1/3,000).
If one of the couple is a carrier, the other person gets tested. With Tay Sachs, if they both are carriers, than the child stands a 25% chance of contracting the disease. Tay Sachs is fatal. I am not a carrier for anything, so DH was not tested for anything.

Re: what was your preconception gyno visit like?
My doc sat me in his office, reviewed my family history of pregnancies, m/c's, difficulties, etc. Went over things to avoid; had me do pre-conception blood work (7 vials!!!) to test for certain things; gave me pre-natals and told me to follow-up in six months if we hadn't conceived.
