x-post from careers: Nassau country correction officer

How would you feel about applying to this job? I saw they have the civil service test up and am really thinking about it. Do you think it is as grimy and gross as i am thinking it is? It pays well, good benefits, pension. Would you go for it?

I work in a jail - from what I see, the correction officers have it great, until they don't (if that makes sense). When they have to do things, it can be REALLY tough, but if you work with guys everyday and they respect you, it's generally pretty light. Training is intense and sometimes they get pee thrown at them (and other bodily fluids). They tend to be easier on females. The one thing that is great for females - when they're pregnant they are put on desk duty right away and stop working at 7 months. I want to be a correction officer just for that! I worked ON my due date in the jail... GL!

I think i can handle the nuts but what scares me is the disease's these people have. That what really creeps me out. I really dont want to risk my health for a job, esp when these people have things that are not curable. What is training like?

I didn't go through training - I'm not a CO. I have a few friends who are though and they said it's intense. You get sprayed with pepper spray, stay in a cell - basically you have to know what it's like to be an inmate.

Taking a job like that for the money or benefits is probably not a good idea if that is your only motivation. I'm in law enforcement but would never want to work as a Corrections officer but that's just me. I've done jail guard duty where I had to monitor arresstees in our holding cells at our headquarters and it drove me nuts, which just reassured me I could never do that every single day..haha. Not sure what kind of training they get but my training involved getting maced, tasered, and doing alot of fighting training where you get knocked around alot, but I love that kind of stuff. I would assume Corrections is similar. If the thought of diseases skeeves you out then dealing with criminals probably isn't a good match. You will most likely be around blood, urine & feces at some point. I think NY Court Officers exam announcements just came out, you may want to try looking that up.

Re: x-post from careers: Nassau country correction officer
One of DHs friends is a CO in the nassau county jail..everything posted above is true re: getting physical with inmates, the danger, etc. One thing our friend gripes about constantly is the low pay because salaries have been frozen for the past 3-4 years with the unions fighting Mangano for new contracts. He makes around $35K and still lives with his parents because he and his fiance cant afford to move out (both are 28/29).

I worked in law enforcement as well, and visited the NCCC on a very regular basis. I would never ever want to be a CO. Never. And to be honest it appeared to be just as hard to deal with the inmates' families and the people who came to visit them as it was to deal with the inmates themselves.

My husband worked there.... from what he told me it was disgusting. It depends on what you can handle personally. I mean he had feces thrown at him once and that wasn't even the worst thing..
ETA: you are sprayed with pepper spray during training.

All I know of being a CO is that I know someone who contracted hepatitis as a CO in Elmira, NY From what I have heard it is a rough job all around.
