We've used them all and honestly they all kinda suck
110% bring DS' carseat! Especially the infant seat. My SIL rented a carseat (and it isn't cheap, like $8-10/day!) when my niece was 1 and it was a booster and they couldn't help her with it at all.
We've never taken additional insurance!

At 7 months you can bring the infant carrier and it is safe to install without the base as long as you install it properly.
We use priceline.com and name our own price!!

If you are a AAA member - call the local office and see if you can borrow one. I know the one in Garden City, here in NY does that.
