Xavier swallowed a piece of mulch
About 1/2 inch long and thin. Do I call the ped?

I would, and maybe poison control too. I know some types of mulch are poisonous to dogs, and I would rather be safe than sorry!

Called the ped. She said since it was such a small piece it should pass and she wasn't concerned about it being poisonous.

I think the only real poison in mulch is mold, but was it stinky old corroding mulch or fresh top layer?
I wouldn't worry about pesticides causing any immediate danger, they usually wear off 24 hours after application. And with a small piece, not a big deal at all. You probably get the same amount in an apple.
Some cocoa mulch is thought to be poisonous to dogs, not humans.
After DS had his first encounter with a leaf, I did the research on everything. In general, Bark is okay, leaves on trees are okay. But vines, bushes, and low plants be weary.

glad to hear it! I didn't mean to scare you, I just heard some types were poisonous to dogs. Phew!
