XP Parenting - Let's talk bakeries

I posted this over in parenting but thought posting here would be good also. Any help is greatly appreciated Chat Icon

I'm in full planning mode for DS' 1st birthday and I still need to order a cake. The party is 4/23 in Rocky Point.

The last two special occasions we used Benkert's in Centereach. However both times they messed up the order.

1 - Baby Shower - The cake was supposed to be ready for 10am pick up. They hadn't even made it yet and DH waited until they got it done since my shower was at 12pm.

2 - DS Baptism - They had the cake ready on time this time, but luckily SIL asked to see the cake and instead of saying "God Bless Albert Joseph" it said "Happy Birthday Albert Joseph".

Their cakes tasted good..really good but I don't want to worry about whether they'll get it right or not. Would you give Benkert's one more shot?

Have any of you ladies heard of or tried any of the following Bakeries:

The Rolling Pin
Via Dolce
La Bonne Buolangerie (sp?)
Create-A-Cake

Please let me know what you thought. If you have any other suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

Rolling Pin ROYALLY screwed up my wedding cake and I will never, ever use them or recommend them ever again.

La Bonne Boulangerie or Tilda's in Rocky Point would get my vote.

Yup, it's right on 25A in the business district next to Sea Basin. I have never had a problem with them and the cakes are super yummy. Also, not for nothing, the Waldbaums in RP made an me an incredible e-party cake that people raved about. I find Create-A-Cake a bit overrated and their prices high.

Tilda's is in the business district in Rocky Point towards St. Anthony's Church. I think they are as good - quality wise - as Benkerts.

I also have had great experiences at Create-A-Cake.

I'm not sure about cakes but I've purchased cookies and pastries from Sweet Home Pastries on Hallock Road in Mount Sinai to RAVE reviews. Plus the owners are really nice!

Disappointing to hear bad experiences at Benkerts and Rolling Pin... they always had a great reputation for quality cake and execution.

Good luck.

I know, I was so disappointed with what they did to my cake; it was EMBARASSING that they would deliver a cake like that. I have emails upon emails detailing with David what I wanted and he ignored it completely.

I've heard great things about Create-a-cake and never had any issues with them when I've dealt with them on the business level.

A few friends have started using Uncle Guiseppe's bakery and it has tasted yummy.

I used the Rolling Pin for my wedding and it was amazing - but hearing a bad review makes me hesitate to order from them again!

Re: XP Parenting - Let's talk bakeries

Im very surprised to hear about bad experiences with the Rolling Pin! They did my wedding cake, baby shower cake and the cakes for their Christening just two weeks ago and every time they were perfect and yummy! And with my baby shower cake they were very accomedating b/c originally we had one idea but then I ended up having the babies 5 days before my shower so my mom called them last minute to change a couple of things and they didn't have any problems with it and it turned out just as we wanted it.

I was just at a 1st bday party and they used Rolling Pin. The cake was adorable and delish.

My family uses Alpine in Smithtown for everything. They make amazing cakes and are really yummy too.

I believe that Create a Cake is owned by Benkert's.

La Bonne Boulangerie (one of the ones mentioned by OP) and Dortoni's are the same owner/family... So, if you want to use LBB because it is closer to your home you can do that and still get the same good quality and amazing cakes that Dortoni's is famous for. I did this for my eparty -- we loved Dortoni's but live in Smithtown so we used LBB in Port Jeff. The cake was out of this world and they were great about every single detail, timing, delivery, etc. being perfect. We didn't pick up the cake - they delivered it. We loved them. SIL used them for her groom's cake - they are fantastic. HTH!

Don't have recommendations for your area, but I would try a new place.

One screw up can happen, two screw ups, I don't come back.

Good luck.

La Bonne Boulangerie can sometimes be a little pricey - so when I don't have the cash for them this is my back-up. Their cakes are SO delicious it is beyond words and I find their prices to be a little more competitive. I also find Audrey's is Sayville to be a great bakery too - they did our Groom's cake and our wedding cake. Beautiful and beyond delicious - so yummy. So, my votes are: La Bonne Boulangerie, Alpine, Audrey's - all three are great! HTH!

Re: XP Parenting - Let's talk bakeries

I have used both Tilda's and Create a Cake. I have never had an issues with either of them with a minor exception. This past summer Create a Cake made my wedding Cake. It was absolutely delicious but when I first saw it at the hall it looked horrible. It was seriously a mess! The hall called them and they fixed it before any of my guests saw the mess it was. HTH

Re: XP Parenting - Let's talk bakeries

I have had multiple bad experiences with Create-a-cake in Port Jeff Sta. They are way overpriced and have had better tasking cake from Costco. DD#1's Christening cake was a lot of money and it looked the the teenager at Waldbaums bakery decorated it.

I love Tilda's! I used to go to Create-a-Cake until I bought a cake there that had green mold all underneath it. Glad we caught it before someone ate it. They gave me my money back, but no apology. I will NEVER buy from them again. Gross! Not to mention how embarrassing it was to show up at my parent's house with a moldy cake!
