XPost from Parenting: Traveling and kids
I posted on parenting about traveling since I have kids. But...I was wondering if any of you grew up with a parent or parents who travelled alot for business. How did it make you feel as a kid? How do you feel now as a grown-up? Just trying to figure out what to do and how DD is going to react as she gets older. Thanks. Parenting post

Re: XPost from Parenting: Traveling and kids
My dad was away a lot, and when home worked a lot. I felt very distant from him...It felt like I wasn't a priority. He was never at my games, concerts, etc. He never knew what was going on in my life. When he was home he'd ask questions like "Who are you friends with?" My mom just knew that stuff from spending time with me. My mom is and was my best friend because she was there for me so much. My father never was. He made his choice, and he put his job first. Now my parents are divorced and I haven't spoken to my father in over a year. The distance was too great. I hope he is happy...He has a huge house, a very important job, lots of money, and no one.

Re: XPost from Parenting: Traveling and kids
My dad travelled all of the time when I was younger - especially when I was a baby. I have absolutely no memory of that! As I got older, the travelling came in cycles depending on which job / position he was at. Honestly, the travelling never affected his relationship with his kids. He was always around for everything and an active part of our life. Most of the travelling was during the week. It also used to be fun when my dad was away - my mom would take us out to dinner and plan other fun things that my dad wouldn't be into!

I didn't experience this as a child, but my thought (as politically incorrect as it may be) is that a girl would be more affected by having her mom be away a lot than she would be if it were her dad. Either way, I think a child *might* end up ultimately feeling like the parent was an absentee parent.

Re: XPost from Parenting: Traveling and kids
DHs dad is a pilot for united airlines, and has been since DH was little. so, he was gone a lot- usually for about a week, then hed be home 24/7 for a few weeks before his next trip... DH was not affected by it. he and his dad are close, because the weeks that his dad was home in between trips, his dad really made sure to spend time with him and they did a lot of things together. so, i feel like if this is only a temporary thing for you and will really help you guys out $$ wise, i say do it. your daughter is young enough that she probably won't remember it... and you will have the time in between trips to be with her...
