XPost from Pets Board: Animal Cruelty Case Woman Pierces the Ears of Cats and Kittens
Her argument is parents pierce the ears of their young children, how is this different?
Interesting argument however bizarre it is.
What do you think?

I dont even want to read this. When it comes to abuse of children and animals I'd rather not read it at all.

I am with her on this one: how IS it different from piercing ears of newborn baby girls?? Same thing, if you ask me!

Not sure where I am on this issue.
It's ok to put a chip in your pet & to neuter them but not pierce them? People tag animals all of the time, no?

I think I presented the reason why pretty clearly. Also see below, pretty good point as well:

Well, according to the news story, the cats and kittens were not well cared for in general and that the act of piercing them was painful.
I think the distinct difference is that piercing your earlobes is not really painful.
And as for chipping and neutering, that's done under anesthesia so that there isn't any pain.
Again, I get the impression this woman was causing them pain. But I think you've got to read the story/watch the video clip to really make a determination.

Re: XPost from Pets Board: Animal Cruelty Case Woman Pierces the Ears of Cats and Kittens
Chip is for safety and probably hurts less. Cats groom themselves and peirced ears can be harmful or hurtful to them. Chips are inside, don't hurt once implanted (which is under a sedative often).
Re children and ear piercing. I didn't pierce my DDs ears at birth (or even yet at 2.5) b/c I feel she should have a choice. So hard for me to address this aspect.

I see she was found guilty... interesting. I think she's sick.
I am not into piercing children's ears before they can decide on their own so I can't say I'd be into piercing a cat's ear since they can't voice their opinions (as much as my cat meows her face off, I don't think she's ever mentioned piercings).
That one kitty's tail....

Yeah, I checked back later and saw she was found guilty. I'm glad.

The tail...wow. That is animal cruelty. Their tail is one big nerve I believe. Glad she was found guilty, this effing wacko.

When a dogs tail is docked, my understanding is that this is a surgical procedure so the dog is put under anesthesia.
These cats and kittens weren't. Plus the picture of the cat we're talking about with the tail - it's obvious that kitty's tail is broken and was never addressed. That's neglect regardless of whether it was a cat or dog.

I didnt see that she had done anything specific to their tails, just that one of the cats being removed from the home clearly had a broken tail.
She was calling them "goth kitties"
what a jerk.

I haven't read the article/watched the video yet but wanted to answer this:

I may be in the minority on this, but I don't think that is ok. Docking tails, ears, etc. for aesthetic purposes isn't something I would choose to do to my animals. There's de-barking, de-clawing too. Things that make our lives easier but are unnecessary.
There's lots of things we do to our animals for our own needs and not theirs. I'm not sure I feel that any of them are ok. Neutering/spaying has medical benefits and prevents over-breeding/population, chipping can provide safety and a way to get them home. I don't think they're the same thing as a purely elective act that does not improve the animal's life in any way, you know?

on the subject of voluntary procedures to animals - my cat is 17.5 years old, and declawed. We got her when I was 14. I feel AWFUL about it... especially when she fake-scratches on things all the time. It makes me so sad. I would never declaw again.
