Re: Xpost... Gestational Diabetes and Insulin Resistance....
I had GD when I was pregnant. I found out earlier than the normal 3 hour test time b/c I didn't feel well. My DD is now almost 20 months. I was first on medication (oral) and when that didn't work they put me on Insulin, 4x a day, and testing my sugar 4x a day. In the beginning things went well w/ the Insulin but by the time I reached the end of my pregnancy (about 1 month before I had DD) my #'s were all messed up regardless of what I ate....they would just continue to adjust the insulin but it didn't work. They just kept doing sonograms and checking what they had to w/ the baby and as long as she was doing ok they weren't so concerned. I had pre-eclampsia in the end so they did a C-section and they said that sometimes that can happen @ the end of the GD pregnancy (something w/ the placenta not breaking the sugar down or what not)...anyway once I had DD I didn't have to follow the diet anymore and after about 2 days I didn't need any insulin b/c my body returned to normal....I am sorry you are going through this but maybe this is happening b/c you are toward the end of your pregnancy? Did they talk to you about inducing you earlier than your due date?

Re: Xpost... Gestational Diabetes and Insulin Resistance....
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for responding!!!
I test my blood sugar 6 times a day and I do the keytone testing as well. I'm 33 weeks on Sunday, and they did say as the pregnancy progresses the numbers will be harder to control. BUT for me they were NEVER under control.... however I found out around 27 or 28 weeks.
I read all the side effects and they scare me. I heard of pre-eclampsia being one of them... and since my numbers are so wacky I'm pretty much starting to almost expect that to happen.
They sort of mentioned inducing early. They haven't harped too much on it yet, but I have a feeling it's going to come up more within the next few weeks since my numbers are out of control. She is also breech... so that's another reason they may induce me early.
At what week did you have the pre-eclampsia and c section?
I'm SO HAPPY your GD went away and you didn't need insulin after a few days of birth. That part gave me so much hope! I'm praying it will be the same for me... that GD vanishes along with the insulin shots!! I was getting worried because I started thinking that it might not since my GD is so uncontrollable... I was thinking that might mean I will have this issue for a while after she's born. My DH is going in for back surgery (either right before, during or after she is born)... so the thought of a newborn, DH being laid out with back surgery and me going nuts with GD still was really weighting on me.

AWWW I know you are so stressed right now. You have alot going on as if being pregnant isn't enough!! You poor thing you're testing so much per day....and I know how upsetting that is when you have eaten well and your #'s are so off. I would also eat so well and it would be so high....or I would cheat and not eat something good at all and my # was perfect, very weird!!!
I was supposed to be induced (b/c they were concerned that the baby would be too big having GD meanwhile she wasn't even 7 pounds) 1 wk early at like 39 wks but at 38 wks my water broke. B/c I had pre-eclampsia they decided to do a c-section b/c I was only a fingertip dilated and w/ my blood pressure being so high they didn't want to let me go a long labor.
Usually if you were not diabetic before being pregnant it goes away after having the baby....they do say that if you are GD that you are at a higher risk to develop diabetes.
Take it easy, try not to stress too much b/c if the doctor is not too concerned, don't be. Please feel free to FM anytime.

If funny you say you would cheat and your numbers would be fine... I've had chicken parm... which isn't really cheating... but since I ordered it and didn't make it at home in my head it sort of was and I would be fine!! I did have veggies and all with it as well.
I definitely wasn't a diabetic before. I had my insulin level checked because one dr thought I might have PCOS since it was taking a little while to get pregnant. My insulin levels were fine.
I heard about the GD causing regular diabetes in like 5 years. That freaks me out a bit too. After this fiasco I seriously do not want to have regular diabetes.
Thank You sooo much!!!

Re: Xpost... Gestational Diabetes and Insulin Resistance....
You are so welcome!! Please FM whenever, I mean it! I know it is scary!! I also have PCOS and I take Metformin..but I have lost 40 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight and I want to lose about another 20 to be at an ideal weight for me. Keeping in good shape and eating well should help prevent you from developing diabetes (that is what I was told). I know you are NOT complaining b/c you are so happy to be pregnant etc....but I do know it is a hard pregnancy. You are almost there!!!

Re: Xpost... Gestational Diabetes and Insulin Resistance....
Hang in there. I have had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 16 yrs old and I am now 32. I went on an insulin pump 4 years ago and it changed my life. Before my pump I had just given up on the notion of having children as my diabetes was never in good control. When we decided to have children I had to do IVF. Before I could get approved to go ahead and do it I had to get my diabetes under perfect control. My doc had sent me to a NP who was also a Diabetes Nurse Educator. She was a lifesaver. After about 8 months I got clearance. It was a good deal of work during that 8 months. Well, I can only say that it got soooooo much worse when I got pregnant! By the end of my pregnancy I was taking 4x the amount of insulin that I was pre-pregnancy. And that was just the half of it. Something that I would eat one day and be fine a week later was off limits completely. It was an emotional rollercoaster. Fortunately through it all I had an amazing NP and a VERY supportive husband. My NP was there for me 24/7. As the pregnancy gets further along the insulin resistance really gets bad. But, when that baby comes it just doesn't even seem to matter what happened before. Within 2 days I was back to my normal amount of insulin and my body was back to its normal way of metabolizing my food. Hang in there, you will get through it. Toward the end of my pregnancy around 31 weeks I was on bedrest for pre-eclampsia and a partial placenta previa. I was going to the DR office once a week, and having non-stress tests 2-3 times a week. I swore that I was never going to do this again and now....My DS and I are ready to get back in gear to try for DC #2 soon!
