Xpost- ICT co teaching 3rd grade class
I didn't know whether to respond here or over there, but this is usually an inclusion class (maybe not always). In our school, there is one in each grade and the class contains students that have learning disabilities or need additional help, thus the second teacher is needed. They will also tend to put students in there who are do really well and show exceptional patience and kindness to others, to help and be an example to the other students.
I don't know if this is the case here, but that what its like in our school. I think its actually a benefit having the two teachers present.

Re: Xpost- ICT co teaching 3rd grade class
I agree with the above poster. I'm on Long Island, but my DS is in an inclusion class that has 2 teachers (he has special needs). One is the general ed teacher, and one is the special ed teacher. They are both the teacher of record, and they both teach and deal with the entire class. The general ed kids that are placed in an inclusion class are typically very kind/caring/patient and are great role models for the special needs kids. The curriculum is the same as any general education class, and in my opinion, the kids can only benefit from having two teachers (and usually an aide) in the classroom - more individual attention, etc.

I just read on the NYC DOE website that what you described is what my DDs classroom is. However, this is NOT how the teachers described it at all. I understand confidentiality of children's needs however all they said was if your child is doing exceptionally well and needs to be challenged OR if they need extra help we will both offer this. Neither mentioned a special Ed certificate.

Re: Xpost- ICT co teaching 3rd grade class
I am an ICT teacher on LI. I LOVE it. It will be hard for me to go back to teaching by myself if I ever need to! Yes, much of what was posted is true.
A certain percentage of the class has special needs of some type but are not so severe that they need to be placed in a self contained class. Often, many of the general students are looked at as role models for good behavior etc. There is one general teacher and one certified special ed teacher BUT we do not teach like a class within a class. We share ALL students. Sometimes I pull a group to the side that needs extra support other times for enrichment. She does the same. I swear I wish everyone could co teach. It's an awesome gig!

I suspect they don't just come out and say it because many parents have a problem with their child learning with special education children. I don't agree with that, but sadly I've heard about it more than once.
