xpost: Looking for feedback on the Tampa Bay area
No responses on home board so maybe I should've put it here. DH has raised the possibility of moving down there and we did live there once before but I have no clue about the schools other than a very vague impression that in general they leave much to be desired. Anyone I knew with kids while we were there had them in private school so that's where I got that impression. Could be a mistaken one. But it's left me intimidated at the prospect of choosing a school district. I'd appreciate any information you can share. I don't feel like a realtor is necessarily going to be completely forthright or as particular as I am. We need to make an informed family based decision.

I'm no help because I have never lived there.
But I have found www.greatschools.net a very informative website regarding school districts.

Your welcome!
The website is great, they have school ratings, ethnicities, students:teachers ratios etc.
Hope this helps you on your search for answers!1

Re: xpost: Looking for feedback on the Tampa Bay area
I am also looking at moving to Tampa. My DH's brother and SIL are living in Wesley Chapel which is part of New Tampa.
They rave about the schools, but I don't have specific information.

Re: xpost: Looking for feedback on the Tampa Bay area
I lived in Wesley Chapel for about 7 years and Tampa(Carrollwood) for about 3.
Wesley Chapel schools are great...so are the schools in Land O Lakes.
We were going to move back there instead of NC...but houses skyrocketed there

What did you think/hear about the schools in Carrollwood v. Wesley Chapel/New Tampa area. they seem to be rated better in Carrollwood but I thought the general impression was New Tampa was better

new tampa is pretty mixed. Its basically tampa..slightly north of tampa is the university area. That area isn't too good. Drive slightly more north and you hit new tampa...so its a mix. The meadow pointe subdivison is huge out there, a lot of my friends own homes in there.
The Northwest section of Tampa is Carrollwood. Nice area...huge lake so a lot of money around there. The main road is Dale Mabry. Gaither HS is pretty good. Further North on Dale Mabry is Land O Lakes. That's where DH lived and where we went to high school. Great area out there.
Like I said, we were heading back down to that area....but its hard to live next door to your friends who got in before the housing boom.
Pasco County schools are all good. When we moved down there, we had all just left catholic school. My parents had only attended catholic school as well...but there were no catholic schools in the area, so we gave public a shot. All of us play an instrument(free lessons), played every sport...they have gifted and honors programs...I scored a scholarship, my sister went full scholarship to Boston Univ...my other sister full scholarship to Temple...my youngest sister(she went to a catholic hs in NY..but public elem and middle) full scholarship to UNC.
We still throw around the idea of moving back down there...its a great place to raise kids.
ETA: New Tampa is Hillsborough County...Wesley Chapel is pasco County.

thanks so much. my inlaws call wesley chapel, new tampa, but they just moved there, so maybe it's because they are new to the area.
they live in pasco in meadow pointe. they love it. my dh and i have looked at houses in meadow pointe, country walk, seven oaks, live oak, and a few more that i can't remember off the top of my head. we loved a houses at country walk and seven oak.
i am so glad to hear good things about pasco schools. i heard that hillsborough taxes are higher, so that's a strange mix. that was one of our big concerns is that we know the schools on long island are good and we wanted to make sure our kids get the same education in florida.

.
no problem, they are so close to each other that everyone calls it new tampa.
We lived off of 54 near the golf course back in Quail Hollow.
DH lived in Lake Padgett.
