Re: going part time ?
I feel anyone can go ahead and try to apply for unemployment.
I think if you want to work P/T though you need to go in with a plan, have everything written out and show how your working P/T is going to save them money and work in their best interest.
You also need to have the hours you plan to work, your role/duties and anything else you are willing to do on paper (i.e. being on call, carrying a cell to be reached when not in the office, etc.).

Re: going part time ?
I agree with PP. I would not "tell" them I would request it, unless you work for yourself. If you have a boss, I don't think they will appreciate you telling them what you are going to do
I would outline how you can possibly get all of your work done on a part time schedule vs your full time schedule now, and what pay you are willing to accpept.
If they fire you, you are allowed to collect UI.

Re: going part time ?
I agree iwth the pp. You can't tell your employer you plan to go PT. You were hired for a FT position. What you can do is propose a plan for you to work PT, include in that a reasonable salary based on the amount of hours/days you plan to work vs your current #, and the work you feel you can accomplish in those days.
I would be prepared if they say no. The most likely wont Fire you for asking. But they will say no we can't do that.
