YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
Since we are fairly new homeowners, do you think it is a cool gift to get your significant other something home related for a b-day, anniversary, etc..? Example Tool box, lawn mower, etc.. just like giving a women a vacuum for her b-day
I remember giving my DH a really nice tool set back in Sept and I knew we were closing on the house in Oct, so of course in the back of my mind I am thinking "This will come in handy", Meanwhile, he looked at me like I was nuts

We did not buy gifts to each other but as of necessity or for US. I don't consider tools, etc... gifts but necessity for the house. Unless this is something he "loves".

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
We didn't buy gifts for eachother. But the day we closed on the house, DH went out to the grocery to pick some food and drinks up and came back with aluminum brownie pans. He took them out of the bag and said "I got these for you in case you want to make brownies" I had to remind him it was the year 2005, not 1955!

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
That's all my DH wants now.....pratical gifts. He never wants cloths or jewlery anymore. He is a pretty easy going person. But when his face lights up when he opens a new tool......it's worth it.
And for me, if I asked for a appliance and he gets me one then i would be happy. But if I didn't ask for one and was hoping for a new piece of jewlery, then I would be sad. But all in all, I have the other things I want already in life, so we might as well (at times) buy stuff for the house. It's still "Our money", so we might as well spend it on the house.

My DH asked for power tools for this past x-mas...and we don't even have a house yet. Sometimes practical is what they want.

for our second anni I redid our bedroom and surprised him in lieu of a gift.
new bedding, painted walls, and new decor...did it all while he was at work.
it's the gift that keeps on giving

I have to say that on less he like tools and all that (which my FI does) I consider that anything house related is not a gift is a necesity for our house. My mom used to say to my dad that the day he brought her a blender or something like that as a mother's day present or b-day present she would not accept and will still expect something else, I tend to think the same way.

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
The only way we give home related stuff as gifts is if it's discussed before-hand. It's more in place of a gift really. For example, we closed in December of 2007, and for xmas we bought stuff for the house, but I didn't wrap it up and call it his xmas gift. We did buy less acutal 'presents' because we agreed to make major home purchases instead.

I would only buy something like that if he asked for it for his Birthday.
Because i know i do not want a new Toaster or blender for my birthday!!

Many of our gifts are house related since we became homeowners. Our gifts are really for both of us now!

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
I bought DH a new exhaust fan for the bathroom for his bday, which he kept saying he wantd to replace. Although he wasn't "thrilled" with it, he also admitted he never would have bought one to replace the noisy one, so it balances out.
We've each bought things for one another that were for the apt/house, but as long as we have fun with it, what else matters!

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
we don't really have strong feeling on gifts, so practical things make sense for us to give. I got him a wheel barrow for a father's day gift (since he said he really didn't want anything and he was always saying that ours s*cked - and it did)) i think I used it more than he does

Re: YAY or Big Fat NO, buying gifts?
i think it depends on the person
I always buy Fh tools etc for bdays xmas etc.. and he loves them - but he is very hands on and loves to spend his free time working on his car or building/fixing something.
but i know he would never like if i bought him a toaster or something more along those lines
