Year of pig flying high
Revelers set to celebrate Chinese New Year in style

Chinese New Year begins in New York today with lion and dragon dances beckoning in the Year of the Golden Pig.
Colorful dancing troupes will weave their way through the city's Chinese communities, visiting businesses to wish them luck for the coming lunar year and letting off firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. Today marks the beginning of 10 days of celebrations that will take place across the Asian world.
The festivities will close next Sunday with the Chinatown annual lunar parade and races between four trained piglets in lower Manhattan.
"Chinese New Year is the one holiday that attracts the most amount of people to Chinatown," said David Eng, director of marketing and development at the Chinatown Partnership, one of the groups responsible for the new year celebrations.
"Anyone who comes down will see how rich Chinese culture is and how relevant it is to all aspects of life."
The Year of the Pig is year 4705 in the Chinese calendar and signifies a time of growth, prosperity and luck in the lunar calendar.
It follows the Year of the Dog and is the last of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac.
The year 2007 is considered extra special because it is the Year of the Golden Pig. The event takes place every 60 years when the pig zodiac coincides with the calendar's gold element. Gold is one of five elements that rotate every year. Babies born during the Year of the Pig are believed to be lucky, hardworking and loyal. They will also lead a comfortable and wealthy life.
Hillary Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Woody Allen and Elton John were all born in the Year of the Pig.
"The Year of the Pig is a very good year," Eng said. "It's about prosperity and a good year to have children, so many people who are planning to start a family would probably like to do it now."
