Yep, add Katie to the list of the sickly babies...she has RSV
Took Katie to the ped today (also found out another baby in her daycare class was hospitalized with RSV).
Sure enough, she has RSV and double ear infections. My poor little baby.
Back on antibiotics for her ears and pedilyte to try and keep her hydrated.
Tis the season I guess

OOh that stinks! I am so sorry Katiebug! I hope you feel better soon sweet one.
If you don't mind me asking, what are the symptoms of RSV? I want to make sure that I know what to look for.

OMG por Katie. As Deb said, I'd like to hear the symptoms as well if/when you have the time to tell us. Hope she's better soon!

Re: Yep, add Katie to the list of the sickly babies...she has RSV
Unfortunately RSV's symptoms are very similar to a cold - runny nose, fever. Problem is with babies it can quickly turn into a hospital stay. It's highly contagious - spread by droplets (coughs/sneezes) - can also be spread from doorknobs, countertops, clothing --- think STUFFED ANIMALS.
RSV is the virus that causes broncholitis & pneumonia. Usually lasts a week for a mild case.
We brought Joseph in when he was 3 months old. He had a cold that was getting worse & worse. I felt like a paranoid mom bringing him in for just a cold. The neonatalogist said that it was definitely RSV. He didn't have to be hospitalized, but we had to keep him in a small room with two cool-mist humidifers going. The neonatalogist said that if he were in the hospital the first thing they do is to put him in a tent with a cool mist in it. Definitely turn down your heat, bundle up your baby & run that cool mist humidifier.
Deb - if I recall most preemies qualify for a shot that helps prevent it.
Another link with more info Synagis (palivizumab). It has been approved for prevention of RSV disease in children younger than 24 months of age who are at high risk for serious RSV disease. Synagis has not been approved for treatment of RSV infection, making prevention for high-risk children even more important. Synagis is given as a monthly shot to protect your child from contracting RSV. If your child is in a high-risk group, especially babies who were born two months or more premature (32 weeks gestation or less), ask your doctor about using a preventive medicine.

Thank you
Yes...all of what Barb said is true - and I know premies can get it very bad if they are 6 mos and younger.

Re: Yep, add Katie to the list of the sickly babies...she has RSV
Alex has had RSV 3 times now, though never so bad, and it never required a hospital stay. It usually starts out as a cold, but as the cold progresses you can actually "hear" it in her little chest. If I put my ear up against her back or on her chest I can hear her wheezing a little, as if phlegm is caught in there. We usually take her straight to the ped, and they prescribe a nebulizer, to be used a few times a day until it goes away. For daycare the doc gave us an inhaler that gives a quick shot of the medication, because the nebulizer takes time, and can be difficult.
