YES ANOTHER Katrina Q
WHy is it that people fail to realize that the biggest common factor of the people who lived there were POOR?
I understand that the majority were black...but why is it that people aren't yelling about how the poor people were treated badly....
and all you hear is the race thing?

I am not questioning the poor situation, just not ruling out the racial situation either. I guess that is an entire new issue as well. For the majority, black people do make up the poor population in most cities. Why is that?

Re: YES ANOTHER Katrina Q
I believe that it is because the majority of people prefer simplicity. If the reasons why are simple, the resolution must be simple as well. It's more difficult to swallow that the issues of race and socio-economic status have been intrinsically tied since the beginning of our society and is probably the most complex problem we have in our country today. Thus, it cannot be 'fixed' overnight.
IMO it's the same reason people jump to place all the blame on the same sole source. It's too uncomfortable to look for the real issues and realize that things are not always black and white (no pun intended)

GOOD question...But that has nothing to do with this scenario... Like someone else said...that has been forever. Like another thread says....it is hard to make money when you don't HAVE money...
BUT if you were to really look at that situation the BIGGEST issue was the ECONOMICS of it....NOT race....Race and poverty is a long time unfortunate social issue for our country.

Re: YES ANOTHER Katrina Q
I feel like Pre-Katrina, poverty was a factor. Those with no means were told to go to the dome. Maybe more residents could have been bussed out to other areas before hand.
Post-Katrina I feel does have a race driven force behind it. I know not EVERYONE there was black, but the majority were. I don't believe that thousands of white people would have been left stranded like that and dying in the streets. I don't think America would have turned on their TV's everynight and watched white families and white children homeless and hungry in the streets.

1. You can thank their MAYOR (who happens to be black) and govenor for that kind of thing
2. All the people in the dome were not black. And if you seriously think that later part of i would think you would leave such a racist country!

exactly
#1-the mayor. He is not poor, he should have done more to get people out pre-katrina.
#2-I know not all were black, but most were. I would not abandon ship on my country, rather stick to my guns and hope for a change.

no I am saying the mayor had his chance at pre-katrina to get people out. at that point, he was not reaching out to the poor.
I do not believe he is racist. I do not believe your town mayor is qualified to handle a huge disaster.

But you believe that Bush is a racist for not doing all he could to help them...
Why is it different?
And no he may not be able to handle this part but she sure could have done A LOT more to help "his people" and he didn't...
If i thought the way you did...taht would make him a BIG racist
