You know what really ticks me off?!
You all know about this stupid goda**, piece of sh*t, no good, pain in the arse "firm retreat" to jamaica that's causing some marital strife, right?! Yeah, well, DH and I finally resolved our issues, he's ok with the fact that he has to stay home with Alex, and now I find out I have to PAY $385 for a double room because I'm not bringing my husband, or otherwise share a room. I'm 31, I'm not SHARING a room with some young associate who I don't know who will likely be spitting drunk at all hours of the night, no thank you... I can't wait for Dh to find out about this I wouldn't even pay that much to go to Jamaica on my own! I don't even LIKE jamaica!!!

What sort of a firm retreat is it that you have to pay for your accomodation? That's really, really unfair.
Do you "have" to go?

Re: You know what really ticks me off?!
If I am paying that much and getting stuck in a double room I would be bringing my husband and baby or not going!
Or are you friendly with anyone in the company who is also going alone and you wouldn't mind sharing a room with?

I was TOLD it was an all expense paid "retreat" to Jamaica for 4 days at an all inclusive. The firm pays for the hotel and airfaire, and will pay half the cost to bring a spouse, but when I asked if I could bring my 1 year old, AT MY EXPENSE, because we have no one to watch her at home, they said NO, so Dh has to stay home with her. But, now, I find out that for the hotel, I either have to share a room with someone I do not know, which in my opinion, is VERY weird, and uncomfortable, when you're talking about business relations. OTHERWISE, I have to pay $385 to stay in my own room. The charge is for staying in a double-occupancy room with only one occupant. And YES, if I want to succeed at this new firm, I do have to go...

What kind of repercusions would there be at your job if you didn't go? Would you be singled out? Is everyone going?
How much would a trip to Jamaica be for that length of time otherwise? I have never been so I don't know.
Does it include drinks and stuff because if I had to pay I'd get drunk every day!!!

Not allowed to bring baby - the firm rents out the entire hotel and charters a flight so they control everything. Dh has to stay with her because we have no family to watch her, and NO, I don't know any of the female attorneys who are travelling solo. We were just acquired by this firm and the main offices are in another state so I literally don't know anyone other than the people at my office in Philly, and here, there's only one female, and she's bringing her hubby

It definitely wouldn't look good for me to not go and it could hurt my future career path at this new place. We're the "fresh meat" so everyone's eyes are on us right now and it's very important I get out there, meet the new people and make a good impression. Most people are going... the total cost of the trip would probably be about $3k. Yes, it does include everything else, food, drinks, etc...

Re: You know what really ticks me off?!
That sucks. I would go & share a room. There is not a shot in he11 they're going to put a male with you unless they want their own lawsuit.
At our events, anyone below VP has to share a room unless they have a medical condition. If they want their own room they have to pay for the other half charge for the room.
At this point they're saving on airfare for your husband. They should eat the cost completely.

I would just share a room with someone - maybe if you're lucky they won't be there much. It definitely sucks though!

Re: You know what really ticks me off?!
Ugh, I just looked at the form again and I probably can't even share if I wanted to. It says "If you are traveling solo and do not wish to incur the additional cost of a signle room, please suggest a possible roommate for your stay and we will work with the hotel on your behalf. Roommate: ____________"
Looks like I have to know someone and write down their name as a roommie, and considering I don't know anyone at the other office, won't work for me. So, I'm out of $385.00 for a trip I don't even want to take

How much would it have cost you to bring your DH? Would they pay if you brought a friend?

Re: You know what really ticks me off?!
Ok, I have a perfect solution. Bring a close friend that you never get to see and who you've been close with for over 15 years of your life. Tell your firm I'm (I mean, "she's" ) your "partner."
We all had to share rooms on our retreat also. I shared with Olivia. We had the time of our lives and we did party til all hours of the night.
You shouldn't have to pick a roomie or have to pay though. That's BS. Kathy's company is making her go to FL for a convention and pay for her airfare....and she HAS to use Delta which has the most expensive flights because her boss wants the miles! She can't bring John or the kids either. You want to talk unfair? Oh, and did I mention she makes like $0 an hour and it's a p/t job? So life can be worse.
ETA: On my other retreat, I had to share with my boss who is 15 years older than me. Now THAT was awkward and weird, esp. bc I still came in late and drunk, lol. Make the best of it. It's FREEDOM time...and it could be in an "ickier" place than Jamaica.

Re: You know what really ticks me off?!

Dont even make a reservation - but tell them you did. Last minute back out bc you are "sick" or baby is "sick" or DH is "sick" and cant watch the baby.
