I got a blistering sunburn from being under the umbrella (completely in shade) for like two hours or so. I thought I was TOTALLY fine and I got such a bad burn! 
So sorry- try lanacain and aloe!

How do you get a sunburn if you are not in the path of the sun's rays though?

that sounds like me!
I lay out in the SHADE when I go to the Caribbean with SPF 45 and still get color

Add me to the badly burn club, actually DH burns worse than me. We used Sunscreen even on our Alaskian Cruise, imagine if we went to the carribean, oh lordy!!
