Re: You thoughts on sick days (could be career-related, but also political)
At my old job my manager once put up a sign in our break room basically saying calling out sick was being inconsiderate to the rest of the staff. Whatever her motivation was for it totally backfired and if anything I think more people took "mental health days" once that sign went up. And I work in a hospital as a nurse where the understanding of how germs are transmitted is quite clear. Forget about calling out sick on a holiday, the only way out of work was death.
At my current job we have PTO for everything which I think works great. I believe we get 4wks/yr which can be carried over yr to yr.

I get six sick days a year. If I don't use them, I lose them so I use them. I use them for physically illness or mental health days. I think I used one for jury duty this year since the alternative would have been the $40 stipend.

A bit off topic, but how does your company handle sick days where you call in sick but do work from home that day? For me, I still charge it as a sick day, but it's starting to get on my nerves since I probably accomplish at least a half of a regular day's work when I'm sick and at home (unless I'm totally laid out, fever, etc.)
I log into my work network, so as long as I'm logged in from home, I charge those hours.
im in sales, i COULD log on and make calls from home when I take a day but i wont. they wont pay me, im using my sick time, im NOT working and not getting paid for it!

I am out of sick days and used them all due to serious illness. It is rough, because I am very sick and have to be in right now.
I understand some people take advantage, but right now I could use a few more to get me through my treatments.

We get 5 sick days, I feel like they are part of my salary so I use them when I am sick but if at the end of the year I have not used all I make sure I do
I have a problem with this, they are sick days not vacation days.
Why do you feel entitled to take all 5 days each year?
you have a problem with it because you have "annoyed" in your name...
I'm pretty sure you're annoyed by a lot of things.
just saying.
And you have someone who looks like a 70s porn star in your avatar
There is a difference between sick days which are for when you are sick and vacation days. I think even an idiot would be able to understand the difference.

We have a plan here where people can donate vacation time to others that need PTO, you should ask your employer to do something similar.
Here people have used the donated time for taking care of sick family members, helping in Haiti after the quake, Katrina, personal illnesses, etc

I'm confused as to why you have a problem w/ppl using this-I agree w/the OP, if I havent used them, I will take them at the end of the year...as so do MANY others!

See it's unfair to not be able to carry it over and that's what causes people to "abuse" it. At my last job we were allowed to let it accumulate and then we could cash it in once we reached the cap (I think it was something like 150hrs)

We can bank up to 500 sick hours. We are also allowed to use up to two weeks of sick time for doctor's appointments per year.

I have no idea how many sick days I get. I'm sure I use most of them.
My husband gets 12, he almost never calls in sick. They usually pay it out at the end of the year.

We earn 1 sick day a month so 12 a year. We can carry over unused sick time which is great. Under normal circumstances, I'd never use them all but right now I have zero PTO through the end of the year because my company was nice enough to let me take it all while I was on maternity leave so I could continue to collect a paycheck.

Re: You thoughts on sick days (could be career-related, but also political)
I get 10 occasional days to be used for sick or personal.
I never use them all. I very rarely call out sick. I have used them as scheduled personal days-but again, I don't usually use them all.
When I was younger, I subscribed to the mentality that sick days we "my days" and I would run through them at the end of the year if I had and left.
However, at this point in my career, I would feel silly calling in for a sick day if I wasn't really sick.
I'll call out for a sick day if I am really sick (I have to be 1/2 dead not to drag myself in sick though) and, I'll call out if one of my kids are sick-but I tell my boss the truth (still considered an occasional day whether I am calling out sick for me or my kid).
I will also use the occasional time or vacation to book dr appointments-I schedule this in advance so I'm not calling out.
I get a good amount of time off between vacation and occasional, plus mu manager is really flexible soI almost always leave some on the table at the end of the year which is fine-because as long as I have enough to cover the kids when they are sick, I'm good

Re: You thoughts on sick days (could be career-related, but also political)
Mixed. I knew many people who took sick days as soon as they got them in one place where I worked and I suspected they were not really sick. But they were there and they took them. So I see the downside of giving a set number of days. Plus, it may prevent people from taking them when they are really sick if they are out or running low.
DH works for a company that offers sick time, but they do not spell out how much anyone is entitled to take. Hence, he almost never takes sick time (nor does anyone else he works with), because no one knows when it's too much. A couple people have been let go for excessive absenteeism also.
So I dunno

Re: You thoughts on sick days (could be career-related, but also political)
i think its a catch 22, it really depends on the person. Some people will take advantage of unlimited... but someone like me would just take time when i was really sick. on the other hand when you give X numebr of days and you use them or lose them, I think more people are more likely to try and use them because they feel like they are entitled to them and can, and i can't say i disagree with that mentality... its hard not to even tho I rarely call in sick.

Re: You thoughts on sick days (could be career-related, but also political)
I get 7 sick days per year - use them or lose them. So I use them. If there is an unexpected surgery or something like that we can use short-term disablity if we are out of sick time...
ETA: Also have 4 weeks vacation and 3 days personal that we can use at our leisure that is separate from "sick"

At my old job, we got 10 or so a year. It was use it or lose it... so everyone did! I was hardly sick so I def. used them for other things, if it was just 1 day off. Everyone did it, no big deal.

Obviously an IDIOT would understand the differece, but at the same time an IDIOT would also have a problem with someone using time they are entitled to. If I don't use the days I lose them, as I originally said, it is part of my salary package, it's not like I get unlimited days, and it's not like I can roll them over or give them to someone else.
