Re: Your Neighborhood
We're in Wantagh too, Mandalay area.
Pros: - good schools - decent shopping nearby - quiet neighborhood - a few good restaurants - close to several large parks - close to several parkways - on a good LIRR line
Cons: - we don't have a cute downtown area like a lot of other towns do - taxes are high since we don't have much commercial business to offset them - in our area there are a lot of the same houses, so it's very cookie cutter - sounds stupid, but the only convenient supermarket is King Kullen, I have to drive a good 15-20 minutes to get to a cheaper store

DH & I both grew up in Bay Shore and bought a house in Blue Point. We are south shore people.
Blue Point has a good school district (Bayport/Blue Point) Nice, small quaint town People love this town Close to the water We have our own town beach, Corey. Flo's Luncheonette There is a St. Patrick's parade in our town every year most blocks have side walks good restaurants big property low taxes
I love Flo's! My IL's live in Blue Point so I've spent a lot of time there. The tai restaurant on Main Street (at Blue Point Ave and Main Street in the little shopping center) - SO GOOD! And Satellite Pizza has great speciality pies!

Re: Your Neighborhood
Huntington (Centerport/North Greenlawn border)
Pros: *most homes are on an acre plus *older neighborhood, which means mature trees *tree lined streets (it's a beautiful, walkable neighborhood where people come here to walk & run. The Little Cow Harbor Race goes through our neighborhood.) *great SD - Harborfields *small community, mostly b/c the SD is small (many move from their smaller homes/properties in Harborfields to this neighborhood) *1 mile from the water, 3 miles to Centerport Beach *5 minutes from Huntington Village, less than 10 to Cold Spring Harbor *5 minutes to Huntington Station Train Station *45 minutes - 1 hr drive into NYC *we're 1 mile from Centerport Fire Department (you don't realize the importance of that until you need them!) *lots of doctors/medical facilities nearby *Huntington Hospital is close by
Cons: *No nearby major highways (I also see that as a positive) *high water tables in the area (a number of properties have ponds on them), which means the potential for flooding...whether just on your property or in your home *older homes from the 50s, which means ranches & splits, but many new homeowners are leveling them and rebuilding or making drastic changes *not many fast-food joints (which I also see as a positive...depends on how hungry I am! )

Re: Your Neighborhood
We rent an apartment in a house in Holbrook. My area seems to have lots of homes with rentals (good for people looking to rent or those who want to buy with income potential). I am in the northern part of Holbrook, north of the LIE.
pros: VERY close to the LIE, less than 5 min for me good school district and library great neighborhood - all the homes have large yards and plenty of kids out playing everyday lots of great casual restaurants on Portion Rd/Middle Country Rd close to shopping/Smithaven Mall less than 5 min to Ronkonkoma train station
cons: close to the airport - you can hear the planes alot in the summertime lots of traffic - on the LIE at rush hour, on Portion Rd on the weekend

I live in Flushing--North Flushing if we're being pompous about it...it's pretty much on the borders of both Whitestone and Bayside.
Some great things...
*There is a great park on my cross street--playground, sprinkler, pond, boccie court, basketball, etc...
*Public transportation is so accessible. We're within a mile of the LIRR and at least 1 bus stops about 2 blocks away.
*Low taxes!
*Top school districts in the city--SD 25, 26.
*The houses around here are amazing--1920s colonials, etc. In fact, our neighborhood is designated an official "Historic District" and they're working on Landmark status. Our house is like the most embarassing one!
*Great bars/restaurants on Bell Blvd.
*My parents and ILs live within 1.5 miles in either direction of us and can babysit on short notice!
ur my neighbor!

We are renting in North Flushing. We love it , and would love to buy
so I would say ditto to all you said about the pros
the cons for us: expensive homes not that much of a backyard or property

Re: Your Neighborhood
Where I grew up:
Smithtown, NY
*Pros
- Safe
- We had a nice amount of land
- My house was walking distance to Maureen's Kitchen
- Near Smithaven
*Cons
I'm going to agree with what another poster said about the area... there's tons of development. There have also been rumors of widening 347 for years, so depending on your location, that could effect property.
I currently live in Springfied, VA... so I don't think that would help anyone, unless you plan on moving to the DC area

Re: Your Neighborhood
We are in Cold Spring Harbor
pros: small quaint town great school district close to huntington village CSH train station
cons: I hate telling repair/service people where I live, because I feel I get quoted a higher estimate and they all raise their eyebrows, like we are made of money - when we just found a really great deal. lack of take-out sometimes I feel like it takes forever to get somewhere

Re: Your Neighborhood
I live in Selden.
Pros:
close to my dh's daughter closer to my job
Cons:
Almost all the houses in my area are rentals (didnt know that when we bought) Not the south shore. Not near my family
I grew up in Deer Park and lived in Babylon all my adult life so I have a hard time living somewhere that is not near water, not near my family and I truly (not to be insulting) hate my area. I cant wait till dh finishes redoing this house so I can move.
P.S. His daugher and ex are moving to fl in the summer so that wont even be a con for long.

Pros:
-Great School district (25) - Express buses to Manhattan, No 7 train is a 20 minutes bus ride to Flushing - One of the most historic towns of the 5 boros - Low property taxes - Lots of famous people lived here in the late 1920's/early 1930's - it was considered the Hamptons of its time - Beautiful homes - Great pizzerias - Major highways are 5 minutes away
Cons:
- Homes are expensive - Some streets are congested because of the mc mansions that are going up - also contractors are putting up 2-3 family homes were 1 once was...

Glen Cove Pros: cute downtown area shopping close to water/beaches tightknit community, pride in city close to LIRR good restaurants own police force
Cons far from LIE/parkways (about 6 miles) (this is good and bad) LIRR Oyster Bay line is not very reliable LIRR pass $$$$ parts of the town are beautiful and upscale and a short few blocks over they can get scary fast

DH & I have a house in West Babylon. LOVE IT!!!
-I feel like I am 5-10 minutes from everything (any store you can think of, supermarket, LIRR, movie theatre, bars, doctors, gym, etc). But I am in the cutest little neighborhood and everyone around us is SO nice and gets along so well!!!!! In the summertime the kids are running around all over or in someone's pool and all the adults (even the one's without kids) are at someone's house either BBQ'ing or drinking or just getting together. We are all in our late 20's or 30's. We have a blast together and it is just amazing that we found such a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood.
It is so weird because when DH & I were looking for houses I used to tell him about my childhood and explain to him that I wanted that for my kids. ALL the kids on the block when I was growing up used to play outside all day long (when I tell you I NEVER watched tv except for Friday night I watched T.G.I.F for 2 hours and then back outside, even in the winter - just not as late). We used to play man-hunt, cops and robbers, go in the pool, bike ride, play soccer or kickball in someone's backyard, etc, and all the parents would get together at one of their houses and drink all night in the backyard and listen to music and just talk. It was the most amazing times and that is all I want for my kids one day. No computers, no video games, no tv, but to go outside an enjoy being a kid and running around, playing and even getting dirty. My DH would tell me times are changed now and no one does that anymore, and I used to tell him that I will find it. I will find a cute neighborhood for our children. And when i tell you I feel like I found gold with this house. MY DH sees the kids playing outside and when all the adults get together he said to me once "this is what your childhood was like", and I told him yes, and he then said "that's amazing and now I know why you would want that for our kids". Last week when it was nice outside the kids across the street went outside with their scooters and I was so happy. I can't wait for everyone to get together outside with BBQ's and stuff. Although we still get together in the winter inside, to me their is nothing like being outside in the spring/summer.
Anyway as you can see I love my house, my neighborhood, my neighbors, and everything that we have experienced in WB so far. Also the school district is great from what I have heard.
Sounds like my childhood. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Commack but we also did this in Astoria where my grandparents lived.

I currently live in Forest Hills. Here are the things I like about the neigborhood:
1. Convenience to Manhattan / great commute: We have the subway, LIRR, express bus, and regular bus.
2. Austin Street: Lots of nice shops and restaurants
Things I dislike: 1. Parking can be a pain
2. There are a lot of crazy drivers tearing around my neighborhood - it drives me mad!
I couldn't agree more

Re: Your Neighborhood
Lynbrook:
Pros: Close to NYC (35-40 mins on LIRR) Great schools Well kept houses and town, close to shopping and major south shore highways Nice sense of community where we are (very friendly neighborhood) Many activities for children (when we have them)
Cons: High taxes Relatively older homes Small lots (I am on 50 by 100 and that is pretty good for my area)
It has a very nice feel to it and I am happy we moved here!

Re: Your Neighborhood
We live in the Woods section. Pros - cute neighborhood - excellent school district - 15-minute walk to the LIRR - close to shops (I go down to Levittown to shop) - restaurants we like - Hemingways & ThomThom
Cons - taxes are high (IMO) - in our section, there are no basements - mostly oil heat in the neighborhood (but we converted to gas)
We are also in Wantagh Woods! I have to say I think I have the best neighbors in the world. We bought here only 4 months ago and I feel like I lived here my whole life.

Re: Your Neighborhood
South side of Levittown:
Pros: * Walking distance to drug store * Walking distance to my son's ped. * Walking distance to 3 parks * Walking distance to the pool * Walking distance to all 3 schools * Walking distance to pizza, fruit/veggie stand, my husband's barber, nail salon and a card store, chinese food, greek food * Close to Southern State * Near by gas stations/repairs shops * VERY quick drive to Stop and Shop/Target/BJ's and other great stores * Close to the trains, but not so close that you can hear them too loud * My neighbors are older and take care of their homes * Pretty decent schools for a town that's shot down by so many people
Cons: * For the most part I live on a quiet block, but in the mornings and evenings, it is a block that a lot of people take to cut through * No basements in Levittown
I guess overall, I love where I live, but the two cons really do make us want to move elsewhere

Re: Your Neighborhood
South Orange NJ:
Pros: Conveinence to NYC - less than 30 minutes by car and 30 minutes by train
close to the train (great when the weather is bad, can train it to work)
Jitney service to the train - the stop is across the street from my house, and it's great b/c there's a 5 year wait for a parking spot
lots of good diverse restaurants
close to the airport, but far enough away that the noise is not a factor
close to 3 major highways
The surrounding streets are also beautiful and quaint
Cons:
Taxes very hilly - very bad in bad weather grocery shopping not too conveinent lots of deer - need to be extra cautious driving at night

Re: Your Neighborhood
I live in Dunellen, NJ...
I like that it is a small yet affordable, safe & quiet town. Good schools, nice people...although sometimes a little TOO quiet...I like the nature, I am always seeing deer, rabbits, groundhogs and frogs....going shopping and to work is nothing like living in the city...much easier traffic wise and in the shopping center parking lots...
What I don't like is that there is a downtown area which they are supposed to be renovating, but to me it looks like all they are doing is putting in crapola cheapy stores! It could go 2 ways....we have a train station here which is very attractive to people who commute to NYC....they can either spruce it up and in that case, my home value will skyrocket...OR...they can keep putting in 99 cent stores and crap like that and I betcha one of these days my DH and I will decide to move to a "nicer" area!

Long Island City (the Hunters Point/Queenswest area)
Pros: - one stop to manhattan on the 7 - stunning views from home - great parks - awesome neighbors and sense of community - very close to the LIE - great public elementary school and day care center in my building - fantastic neighborhood website - wonderful Catholic parish - good precinct in the neighborhood - a few very good restaurants
Cons: - very expensive to begin with and gets more expensive by the day - lots of new construction means lots of dust and noise - no supermarket or good drug store within walking distance - new, large rental buildings are filling up with roommate shares; will feel like the far upper east side within a year, rather than the family-oriented place it is now - parking is tough to find and very expensive - people who don't know what the area's like right now, believe it's unsafe and filled with hookers. - current infrastructure may not be able to handle population increase

Re: Your Neighborhood
I like this idea! Right now I live in Great Neck.
Pros Good schools Very cute downtown Lots of restaurants Some shops are walkable Lots of parks/good town pool Seems safe, crime relatively low Good libraries Train station is walkable (at least from where we live) Great train line (Port Washington)
Cons Very agressive drivers Near congested areas Some snootiness (there is a pretty wealthy section not far from our home) Lots of shops, but many are pricey boutiques and I don't buy much at them
We are moving to Port Washington, and I'm sure my list will change but so far I would say
Pros Really charming downtown area (with shops we will actually use) Lots of street fairs & festivals--seems to have a good sense of community Great food store not far from our new home Great waterfront park area along one end of Main Street Good pool/recreation facility Train station walkable from our new home Great train line (Port Washington) Some really charming sections of homes Good schools (not great, but good) Good areas to bike in (important to us)
Cons Some not-so charming sections of town Lots of old homes--many need a good deal of work or lack a garage Taxes are highish, though there are worse on LI Not that close to major highways or malls, though DH and I don't use them that much

Re: Your Neighborhood
Live in Nesconset (grew up here also, family moved, then DH and I bought a house here 1 1/2 years ago...
Pros:
-Great family neighborhoods, lots of kids
-Great SD- even though the schools have all re-opened b/c of more students, I don't think it is a big deal. It is the same number of schools that there were before they shut half of them down. (plus, I live walking distance to 2 elementary schools and very close to one of the high schools and middle school...so I'm not worried about re-zoning)
-Good restaurants
-Good Shopping
-nice mix of older smaller homes and new larger homes
-an easy drive to lots of fun places to go for the day (the city, the wineries, etc.)
Cons:
-even the smaller older houses are expensive
-traffic on 347 (as a poster said above, there have been talks of expanding 347...but these have been going on for 20 years. I'd welcome the expansion, or getting rid of some lights to ease traffic....doesn't effect my property.
-high taxes

Hey neighbor!
Ditto for all the pros regarding our neighborhood - we live on the east river and I never get sick of the view of the skyline.
CONS - every movie and tv show in the world seems to film here - I feel like Law and Order is here every week.
Construction is out of control and the luxury real estate market is taking over our neighborhood
And I totally agree about people who dont know about the neighborhood thinking it's unsafe - there was a thread a while back on NFR where people who knew nothing about where we live said there were hookers. Millionaires, yes. Mets players - they live in the building next door. but hookers? no.
