Re: Your opinion on how much should daycare cost

I currently pay $300/week for 1 child, in a licensed home daycare. She has been there since 3 months (just turned 2) and I trust them with her. She likes going and talks about her daycare friends.

ETA this includes breakfast and lunch.

Honestly one thing I don't go cheap with is my child's care. $200 to watch an infant full time is definitely not enough. A proper Nanny is more like 700 to 800 a week. I certainly cant afford that and that's why my kids are in a licensed daycare
You get what you pay for in my opinion.

I agree. $200 a week for 50 hrs works out to $4 per hour!

I agree too. 4.00 an hour is insane, so below minimum wage. Way too low

$200 wasn't suggested for someone coming to your house it was suggested for bring your newborn to a house where the person is either watching other kids our have their own kids.

While I probably would pay closer to $250-$300 for that situtaion I think its pretty fair here is why.

One its off the books they are not paying taxes on it. So while people are getting paid $7-$10 an hour on the books they are not bringing that much home

2nd if they are watching more kids and she is charging the same amount she is making more money so its not just my child she getting paid for so she really is making more money an hour again all off the books.

Even if she isn't watching any other kids but has her own kids home with her than she is getting free babysitting which makes up the cost of not making mimum wage cause if she was coming to my house to watch my child and she can't bring her kid than she would be paying someone money to watch her kids.

Now if someone was coming to my house I still think off the book making $700-$1000 is insane I thin some where between $500-$600 is more reasonable.

I understand you mean dropping your kid off. For 200$ dropping your kid off with other kids there you will get what you pay for. I can't see this babysitter being attentive to your child. Not for me but others might be ok with this. As far as thinking 700 to 1000 is insane for a nanny I don't get this. They are responsible for your child. They should be paid a living wage. This is why we do a licenced daycare. We can't afford a quality nanny and I would never leave my kids with an unlicensed 200$ babysitter.

Why is the expectation that if you pay someone $200 you will get lesser care? I don't get it. Personally, I did not want my child in a large facility where they are just a number and don't receive the one to one attention that they receive with an at home sitter. From my experience working in daycare, those big corporate centers and their employees, just don't care about the kids. But an at home center, whether licensed or not, in my experience does. And a licensed at hom daycare center does not need to be expensive to be good. And you don't need to be unlicensed to charge reasonable rates. But parents assume that because they are not charging a lot of money they must not be licensed. When I used an in home daycare, it was $7/hr with all meals provided. And they were licensed and provided their tax id so I could claim the exemption on my taxes. I don't think $7/hr is unreasonable for daycare.

Who said a large corporate daycare? I said a licensed facility. My child is very well cared for and I know is safe. Paying some lady to watch your kid for $200 with a bunch of other kids is something I just wouldn't do. I cant see someone working for so little being attentive to my child. Could it be possible of course but not in my experience.

I want to add, the numbers I gave earlier for when my son was two was in an at-home daycare that wound up turning into a center-based daycare. The director is a former teacher, she hired individuals who were teaching or going to school for teaching, and I will be singing their praises forever. She decided to expand and it was a wonderful experience. What also helped was having a friend who is a licensor for the OCFS.

Daycare workers (not the lead teachers) don't make that much more than this an hour. $10/hr max and they are taxed on it.

In my house I'd expect to pay minimum 10 an hour but closer to 15. HS kids ask at least that amount. I have also used an in home day care that was 45-50 per day up to 10 hours but I don't know if the cost was higher for infants.

JMO--I stay away from off the books situations for a whole variety of reasons.

So for me, I'd always have to factor in that someone I am leaving my kids with is paying taxes.

Your opinion on how much should daycare cost

My child is my most valuable asset. With that in mind, there's no way I could afford $1000 a week. That's more than my take home pay and I teach over 100 high school students a day. Because of that my son goes to a licensed family owned center. They provide food and watch him for 10 hours day.

Yes but at a daycare there are cameras, multiple teachers, rules and regulations. I just feel safer then leaving my child with an unlicensed person in someone's house without any regulations.

I could not disagree more about the large corporate centers not caring about the kids. We recently left a corporate center and my DD's teachers were AMAZING. They loved her like family and vice versa. I saw the owner and director every day. They were our family. We're at another large center (not corporate) and like them very much so far. My DD's new teacher is wonderful and very obviously loves the kids.

Daycare workers (not the lead teachers) don't make that much more than this an hour. $10/hr max and they are taxed on it.

Yes but at a daycare there are cameras, multiple teachers, rules and regulations. I just feel safer then leaving my child with an unlicensed person in someone's house without any regulations.

This, 100%. And PLENTY of people pay $700-$1000 a week for a nanny. I personally would have to cut corners to afford that but if there is one person on earth I'd want to keep happy, it's the person caring for my child!

Same.
Our corporate center was amazing from day 1 to the day DD left for K.
They were family to us and her

Your opinion on how much should daycare cost

I pay $500 a week for my son at a large corporate day care and it's actually the least expensive day care we looked at. We chose it because of convenience but we love the teachers and Directors-- it also happens to be in the first two floors of our apartment building so very easy for us. I'm in the city so costs are different but we would be paying at least $800/week for a nanny. We considered it but the day care is so easy and our hours allow for us to do pick up and drop off---overall a great situation and we save a ton of $$ in day care vs. nanny. He learns so much, is very social, and there is so much oversight that I am very happy with our choice.

I really think that although we pay $2,100/month (and going up in September), it's worth it. He gets amazing care and I have no trust issues.

Threads like this get so ridiculous. Its an impossible thing to answer or gain consensus on. A "fair" price is marrying what youre personally comfortable and your specific child care needs to what you can afford to or are comfortable paying. It's just a personal thing. People's situations are different from one another, you can't really generalize this stuff.

I pay $470/Week for 2 kids age 2 and 4 at a daycare center. I think its pretty reasonable considering they get breakfast lunch and snacks there and provide all diapers. I used to take them to a friends house who watched them for me (she was a sahm) and paid $10 hr. I prefer the setting of the daycare. The 470/ week is for 2 kids Monday through Friday 830-530
