Your opinion on Music Together

I don't mean to sound dumb, but what do you do at music together?

I am thinking of signing up for the music together classes at Emilia's Dance Studio in Commack.

I just don't want to waste $180 if people say it is a waste.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

I really enjoyed it, and so did DD! We did the spring session when DD was only 8 weeks old (it was 10 weeks) and even then it held her interest and attention.

I signed us up for the fall session which starts tomorrow (DD is now 7.5 months).

I don't know about the older groups but in the baby class, we sit in a circle, the teacher sings songs from the Music Together collection, they play instruments, we dance.

Well when we were taking it - our teacher encouraged the kids to get up and dance. There was some circle time where you bounce the kids in your laps or do other interactive things. We worked with streamers, various instruments (from sticks, drums, etc), and a parachute. You do get up and dance a lot as well.

You get 2 CD's (one for your home and one for the car) and a music book of the songs for that session. This way your children know the music and can better interact and sing along. We did music from 8 months until 2 years - I was signed up for the fall with both girls (siblings under 7 months are free) but I switched DD's preschool and it conflicted with the class we wanted to take.

A LOT of your experience with MT, Gymboree etc I find has EVERYTHING to do with the teacher. A good teacher means a great class and a bad one can really ruin one we have found.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

I go to that exact location and this is my third semester.
DS is 15 months and I think that this may be my last time since he is just so active. But he has enjoyed it and loves playing with the instruments.

I am going on thursdays.
Good Luck!

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

I did the summer class with DS when he was 4 1/2 months old...I had a great time and he seemed to like it, smiling and laughing while he was there.

We are starting again at the end of the month and he is 7 months now.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

I went to one there last summer (it was tuesday at 10:30 with Miss Laurie) anyway, DS was just over 1yo and I really enjoyed it. They sing songs, dance, take out musical instruments for the kids to play and do activities based on the music (roll balls around, pass items etc) adn at the end Miss Laurie let each kid have a turn to strum her guitar (DSs favorite part)

It was perfect for a winter activity and I will most likely do it again in January with him...I stopped because DS was becoming to active and by the end of the 10 weeks all he wanted to do was run around with the other boys.

ETA: I dont think you will feel that you wasted your money at all...Even though DS spent most of the class running around, he would recognize the songs when I sang them at home, he would clap at certain points etc, so even though it didnt appear he was paying attention some things were sinking in!

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

We did it at the same place with Miss Monica - she was fabulous, but it was difficult for Cailen to really sit still for the class, so we started with sports instead...

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

The Music Together program near us allowed us to take one class and check it out before signing up, though this may not help since they do fill up fast. But if you are leery of spending the money, take one and see what you think and more importantly, what DC thinks.

DS didn't like it much at all. He's not great at sitting still, but we have taken another music class that is more active and more to his liking I would say. I also didn't see what the big deal was to be honest, it was good, but not as great as everyone said IMHO. But if he loved it, I would have signed him up.

I should add that my DD never sat - she danced and walked around the whole class if she had a teacher who made her sit we would never have continued the class.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

We've been going since DD was 7 or 8 months. She just turned 2. She loves it and I love it.

In the beginning she just watched. As time went on she started to clap and bop along. She has always very actively played the instruments.

At class, for a long time she just watched and only recently started actually singing.

At home, it's another story. Since she was about 12 months, she does all of the hand movements, and sings all of the lyrics to over 40 songs.

We listen t the CD's, sing and do the motions for the songs in the car and at home everyday. I have a set of instruments for her and she loves them. She often will bring one to each person in the room for an impromptu drum circle.

She learns things, especially songs very very quickly. I think the music classes really taught her how to listen and retain info. She can learn a new song after hearing it 2 or 3 times. I'm amazed by her memory, my mom says she's has a memory like an elephant. Her speech is closer to that of a 3 or 4 year old than a 2 year old and I attribute much of this to music.

I could go on and on about how I feel she has benefitted and if anyone has questions feel free to FM me.

I do think the teacher makes the class. So it's important you are with someone you and DC are comfortable with.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

call and ask about a free sample class.

I literally just got off the phone RSVPing for one in my area. They are all probably offering them now since enrollment is still open for Fall.

Re: Your opinion on Music Together

I guess I'm in the minority, or I had a crummy teacher, but I hated it. I enrolled DS when he was 14 months old, and all he wanted to do was run around, and the teacher did not like that at all, and it was very stressful. If you have an active child who will not sit still, this is not a good activity.

Sounds like you had a crappy teacher--we've been told that the kids SHOULD get up and move around as much as they want, that they should be free to experience the class in any manner they choose. Sorry that happened to you Chat Icon

That said, we started DD when she was only 3 months old--even though we thought she was too young to appreciate it, she was fascinated! She just turned 9 months and we are still going. She absolutely loves it!!
