Z-Pak (Azithromycin antibiotics) safe during breastfeeding?
Ugh, I am so sick with the flu or some other infection and my doc prescribed Z-Pak. She said it was fine for breastfeeding, as did the pharmacist. But I double checked with my DD's pediatrician and she said it was not compatible with breastfeeding.
Has anyone taken this while BF before or know whether or not is is safe? Info I've found online seems to say it's OK.

My doctor would not give me a zpack while breastfeeding. He said he wasn't comfortable with it (although I was on it twice while pregnant )
He gave me Cefprozil (common brand Cefzil) instead. Feel better!

Zithromax is perfectly safe during breastfeeding. It's also used to treat infants. If an infant can have it, then the 0.1% or so that may pass into the milk is fine. Our ped prescribed it for DD2 at 8 weeks when she was in the hospital ruling out whooping cough. I would ask your ped why she is stating it is incompatible if it is ok'd for pediatric use.
Thomas Hale is a pharmacologist who is considered the premier expert in medications while breastfeeding. You'll see him referenced in a lot of articles written by La Leche League, Mothering.com, Kellymom.com etc Here is an article he wrote that is really good at explaining medications and mother's milk......

Thank you! That article was really helpful and great to know for future. I had already called my doc and had her prescribe something else, probably not as effective!

Re: Z-Pak (Azithromycin antibiotics) safe during breastfeeding?
When I was sick they were going to give me one. I mentioned I was BF and the Dr said I can't take it. So my answer would be no, don't take it.
I know Drs all say different things, but I didn't want to take a chance.
Feel better!!!
