Zach tried rice cereal tonight for the first time
and he loved it! He was trying to lick the bowl
So, as a new (neurotic) mom trying a new food, how do I know if he is having a reaction? It would have happened already, right? He had it over an hour ago.

my dd had a reaction to oatmeal, the first time i gave her for dinner and didnt notice anything until the next morning. The second time i gave her (as per peds told me to try again a month later) and the reaction happend within 1/2 hour after eating.
eta: her reaction was her face was bright red and pimpley.. looked like a bad burn rash.

She got the rash during the night? Did it wake her up? Was it bothering her?

No she didnt wake up from it. She had the rash that lasted about a week, and didnt seem to really bother her. Looked very itchy to me tho. The peds just recommended that when starting new foods to do in the am and not pm for now on, just in case she does have reactions to future stuff. So far now at 8m its only been the oatmeal. I just put hydrocortizone on the rash.
eta: yes the rash developed over night the first time.

starting in the AM is a good idea. I am going to do that from now on with new foods. My sister had told me to do that and I forgot.
Now I am nervous to put him to bed

Dont be nervous. Im sure your ds will be fine. I think alot of moms have given their child new foods at night. Plus think about it.. you give your child new food for about 3-4 days to see if they will have a reaction right.. so whos to say when in those 3-4 days it will happen. It could happen at anytime, day or night. So its okay. Im sure he will be fine, if it was going to be a major reaction to worry about, im sure it would have happend right away.
