Zika virus. Anyone else nervous that it will spread here?
I'm over here in TX and looking at the cases in Mexico is making me super nervous that this thing could easily spread here.
I get eaten alive during the summer AND we have a pool in our backyard. Hubby does not want me to use DEET, so looks like I'm going to be spending my summer indoors with the AC blasting.
Anyone else very uneasy about this? I'm not due until the end of July and I am getting so much anxiety just thinking about it!

I'm not pregnant but it would definitely be on my radar if I was. And coming from me, it's saying a lot because I am generally not a worrier and pretty lax, even while pregnant.

OMG yes - I'm not due until 7/21 and I live near the water and the mosquitos in the summer are relentless. I also have an almost 4 year old who will undoubtedly want to play outside or go to the park - which of course is on the water.

Yes. We are planning to go to Florida, so I'm worried about it spreading there. And even over the summer here because I don't know how long it would take to get here. I get bitten a lot.

CDC recommended that pregnant women should consider postponing trips to 22 destinations. In Latin America, these countries include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela. In the Caribbean: Barbados, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, St. Martin and Puerto Rico. Also included are Cape Verde, off the coast of western Africa, and Samoa in the South Pacific.
Also added today were Dominican Republic & US Virgin Islands

It's on the news this morning that someone in Nassau has it. She visited out of the country.

This is definitely making me a little nervous. We're traveling to Disney at the end of Feb. I'm assuming it's low risk b/c I don't think there are many mosquitoes out this time of year, but still...

This.
DH and I were just talking about it last night. I think I would be really freaking out if it was here.

Re: Zika virus. Anyone else nervous that it will spread here?
If you don't want to use DEET, I highly recommend picaridin.
EWG link
It's made from the extract of the a pepper plant, it's been used in Europe and Australia since the 90s, and a 20% formula kept me 99.9% mosquito bite-free in the jungles of Costa Rica last year (during the chikagunya-- another mosquito borne virus--scare).
The other DEET alternatives (lemon eucalyptus oil, other herbal stuff) never do anything for me, but picaridin was awesome, you just have to apply thoroughly. I used a Natrapel 20% solution, but Avon Skin So Soft makes a picaridin formula with a lower concentration.
Another article:
NDRC link
Picaridin: Picaridin has been widely used in other parts of the world, and has been available in the U.S. in a variety of brands since 2005. Structurally based on chemicals in pepper, it appears to interfere with the mosquito's ability to smell its prey. The chemical is extremely effective for some species of mosquito (including important disease-carrying mosquitoes such as A. aegypti), but is less effective for other species that don't appear to rely on smell, so overall it may be somewhat less effective than DEET. A 20% Picaridin formulation has been shown to repel mosquitoes for 8-10 hours.
Picaridin is much less irritating to the skin than DEET, so it might be a better choice for people with sensitive skin. It has very low toxicity and does not appear to cause adverse neurological or reproductive effects. Nor does it cause cancer in animals. It also lacks the unpleasant odor of DEET.

I would be extremely concerned if I were pregnant in the summer. The part that is scary about it is the transmission. I am not sure if and what part of the US has this mosquito, likely the southeast, but the fact that an uninfected mosquito can bite someone whom is infected(pregnant or not, and likely the carrier person will be asymptomatic) and then bite and transmit it to another person-that is incredibly scary.
Please pay attention to all these travel advisements ladies. I would try to avoid pre-planning trips to the Southeast US and Florida in the summer until we have more info about the spread closer to the summer.
The main mosquito that carries it is not up here, it's in FLA and TX, down south. But the Asian Tiger mosquito is here and they suspect that one may ALSO be able to transmit it. Those are the bastards that bite during the day, I have been bitten by them often.
So as someone still TTC, I am scared this is coming out now.

DH has been talking about sending me back up to NY or to my dad's house in NH for the duration of my pregnancy if it starts spreading here. Being in TX has me extra nervous about this!

Not right now, no. Anyone who is pregnant right now wouldn't seriously be effected. From what I read, it's most dangerous for women in the 1st trimester. By the summer most of us will be in the 2nd or even 3rd trimester where the baby will be stronger and more fully developed.
But, if it were summer now yes, I'd be worried. lol.

Can it effect you in the 3rd trimester? I don't see anywhere that has information on when it's most dangerous.
