Zoysia grass ??
Does anyone have it ? What has your experience been?
This is our 3rd summer with it, and its still not plush and green.. my hubby heard it can take a few years, and it will get there.. its so discouraging to see the crappy lawn, I want a plush green lawn to walk barefoot on
He is watering it daily, and adding stuff to it, dont know what, he takes care of that stuff
any set of rules to be followed with zoysia or any advice on what to look out for ?

Re: Zoysia grass ??
I heard it was the best as far as hardy-ness and it doesn't need to be watered as frequently and its actually in the weed family. We just bougt a house that has zoysia and I was talking to my dad about this same thing. He said its normal that it is still brown/yellow at this time of year. It is VERY expensive too and it spreads like a weed so if you are patient it should sread and give you a nice lawn year after year.

Re: Zoysia grass ??
We have zoysia. We power-rake every year. We use organic fertilizer (ok the gardener does). It takes a little longer to get that plush green color, but it lasts much longer after the summer. Be patient and you will be happy with it!!

Re: Zoysia grass ??
We have it, and ours started to turn green about a week or two ago. It's still kind of straw-ish, but mostly green. We love it b/c it's low maintenance and we have a dog - so he's running around all the time and could make a non-zoysia lawn patchy. We haven't done anything special other than rake really well, and fertilize.

Re: Zoysia grass ??
We have zoysia and I love how thick and plush it is. It's not the most comfortable for bare feet, while it's thick it ISN'T soft to the touch. If you want that look into a bluegrass mixture.
I LOVE that no weeds grow through it. You do have to be careful with the borders of flowerbeds because it will invade and smother out the plants like it does for weeds in the lawn.
It is expensive. We have a double lot and one side is all zoysia. We want it on the other side as well so when we cut pieces out we cut them into plugs and plant in our side yard and eventually both yards will be zoysia.
Thatching is important to keep it healthy.
Ours is mostly green now we have a few spots left to rake the dead straw from.
Here is a link about zoysia care.

Re: Zoysia grass ??
2 of my neighbors have zoysia grass, and although in the winter is looks like HAY, it looks BEAUTIFUL and green in the summer...and full too. they also say that it requires alot less watering, so that's a plus.

Lisa, youre so funny, I was (and still AM clueless that grass wasnt just grass) a few years back we were in Home Depot and I asked the lady a question about lawn maintenance and she goes "what kind of grass do you have?" My response " ??? you mean there are different types of grass ??? "
Thanks everyone for the great tips and info. I love the look and how hearty it is, and with so many boys in my house, I'll need a tough turf around the house
My hubby put all the plugs in himself I think on most of our property, and plans to put in some more.
