Today they announced that malls, gyms, movie theatres will NOT be part of the phase 4 reopening plan.
Link to news article
Was coming on here to say the same thing:
Malls, outdoor theme parks, gyms, and movie theaters will not re-open at the start of Phase 4 in New York.
They will phase them in. Could be a few days, weeks, a month - who knows?

I just saw an article on this as well...
We have an open air mall as well and I found out many of the stores will not reopen there.

There is a new gym in my neighborhood that was supposed to open APril 1st. It looks liek they put a lot of $ into re-doing it ( it is an independant gym) and htey have all sorts of procedure in palce ( even soem magical germ killing door handles) abd htey are hopign to open in July, but that proabably won't happen. I feel terrible for them & hope they can handle the loss of income.

Yeah I saw some post on Facebook or Instagram from a gym owner who had to close her business after 10 years because she can't afford it anymore after being closed this long. It's heartbreaking for the smaller, independently owned gyms. So many people would be willing to go back to the gym too. My husband said he'd sign every waiver under the sun just to be able to work out in a gym again

Anyone know what phase malls can open?
So did he just create a phase 5?! Is this his way of keeping us in suspense on his decision if schools can open? Everyone kept saying if everything is open than schools can open, I feel like this is his way of keeping them closed. If PA, NJ, or CT open schools we are renting there for the year so our kids can go to a real school.

Probably. He was losing control. Things were opening in an orderly fashion, in the phases he laid out, numbers were holding steady, and he was losing the control he so craves. Why make up phases and rules if when we meet them, you are going to say- oh wait, never mind, just kidding!! He's already sad that he isn't going on TV every day and talking on and on about nonsense for an hour. He had to do something to keep himself relevant.

He so badly wants to keep us closed but he is literally destroying this state. I feel so terrible for these places that can no longer open and can meet his guidelines. I know a gym owner who worked around the clock coming up with ways to make their gym safe so they could open in phase four and now they can’t. Best part was, he never really gave them guidelines or anything. He dangled a carrot in front of them. Sadly, this may have been the final nail in the coffin as they can not only pay for their business if it stays closed but they are also falling behind on their personal finances now.

This was my fear with him stopping his daily briefings. While I can do without them I felt this would give him the leeway to start changing things without the pressure of having to explain to everyone and The chance for questions To be asked!

Schools will be next. We can have 0 cases of the virus, it can be wiped from the face of the planet and he'd still find a way to keep things closed.

I’m the same as your DH. Wanted to go back to the gym and my Kung Fu school. However, I received an email that when they open you will have to sign up for classes (which will make it difficult since it’s a small school but I can deal with) and wear a mask to work out. There’s no way I can wear a mask for 45 minutes while doing a high impact kickboxing class. We do 4 sets of circuits which in include jumping jacks, push ups, High knees, squats etc.. plus self defense moves.
There’s no way. I’m so bummed that I won’t be able to go. I’m not even sure if my son will stay in Kung Fu, which is really sad because he’s been going there for 6 years.

Wearing a mask while doing that kind of intense cardio actually sounds dangerous to be honest.

I don’t see how a mask would be feasible under those circumstances. Though, I do see lots of people and kids on bikes wearing masks. No helmets, but masks. Afraid of COVID. Cool with traumatic brain injury.

It does. I think this is one of the cases where I can see my asthma making it worse with the mask. I definitely won’t even attempt it.
I’m hesitant about my son because they also do 3 sets of circuits in his class. I’m not sure how healthy that is but my DH thinks we should just let him do one class and see how it is. This is the only sport or extra curricular that stuck, it would be a shame if he quits now.

Anyone know what phase malls can open?
I feel bad for Cuomo to have to make these types of decisions. Either people will die or people will not get paid. I honestly think he is doing what he thinks is best for the state of New York. Maybe we can get a few months out of not having our hospitalizations too high to control. The stay at home order worked. It was suppose to slow the spread. He is now slowly opening the economy, so we can slow the spread.
I have relatives in 3 New York hospitals. They told me they never saw in their life what they saw during March/April. I have an aunt who works in a nursing home. She thought the same thing.
We now have to do our job. Wear a mask when you are out in public or when you are with groups of people who do not live with you. Many people aren't doing this. So we will see another spike. Look at California, Arizona, Florida, and Texas. Their numbers are rising. So are hospitalizations. You could see the deaths rising in about a week or two. This will be New York if we do not do our part. Wear a mask and open things slowly.

This sucks, all the way, no matter how you look at it. BUT, what scares me more than anything is having to do it all over again. Seeing the tremendous spikes in numbers in the southern/ western states is truly frightening. I's so much rather go super slow here, now, than rush to open and have to go backwards.

The problem is that so many people will either have no business to reopen and employees not having jobs. Stores can not survive half a year with no business, even larger ones. I get the slow opening but we are going on 4 months and the numbers are so low and covid floors have closed up in hospitals and barely any patients. We can't stop life until we have absolutely not one person with the virus. That will never happen. If you have issues and can stay home then stay home. The rest of us can be cautious and go out our lives. Not everyone can sit at home for months on end. That extra unemployment is ending in July. What then? How do people pay their bills and eat and survive.
I am sorry but this is all a power trip for him and he said he was DONE with his briefings. He can't live without them, just like Trump with the Rally's. They need the attention and want it on them the entire time.

ITA. I don't know why people are so hard on Cuomo. IMO, he's doing the best he can in these crazy, unprecedented times.

Anyone know what phase malls can open?
From News12:
An aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo tells Newsday that phase four businesses will be divided into subgroups, with some opening earlier than others.
The aide says shopping malls, gyms, and movie theaters won't be allowed to reopen at the start of phase four. The wait for those places could be a couple of weeks -- or even months.

So does anyone know what can open in the beginning of phase 4? Maybe more capacity for restaurants etc?

The aide says shopping malls, gyms, and movie theaters won't be allowed to reopen at the start of phase four. The wait for those places could be a couple of weeks -- or even months.
So does anyone know what can open in the beginning of phase 4? Maybe more capacity for restaurants etc?
Not sure if this is helpful

ITA. I don't know why people are so hard on Cuomo. IMO, he's doing the best he can in these crazy, unprecedented times.
I think he is in a tough spot. It's a terrible thing. I feel so bad for those who have lost everything. I do think he handled everything appropriately. I don't even want to imagine what we might have seen if we didnt shut down. I think a slow reopening is also key so it doesn't come black. Look at what's happening in Florida

From News12:
An aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo tells Newsday that phase four businesses will be divided into subgroups, with some opening earlier than others.

When he says what can open when he wants them to open

This!
He’s in a tough, no win situation. I believe he does not want the hospitals to be overwhelmed and for people to die unnecessarily. I believe that he understands that people will still get Covid and die, but wants NYers to try their best to get hospitalizations low so people can get adequate care and not die due to poor hospital conditions.
