Torn and considering a move....but what about kids?

I've been so horrified by my school district's response to COVID. I always believed it to be a good/fair district and my children have made such wonderful friends and I have as well with their parents. However, the abysmal response to the pandemic shows me how ill-equipped and subpar the academics really are.

Needless to say, I think some districts on LI have far better reputations and in my research have handled remote learning much better. I am seriously considering a move. I thought about private schools as well, but with the enormous taxes we pay, an additional $20K+ seems unreasonable.

I broached the subject to my children, and with crocodile tears they were begging me to stay. They will be in 4th and 5th grade next year. Do you think a move would be traumatic for them, given everything else they've had to go through the last few months?

I truly think it will be in their best interests academically. Our schools have never been exemplary, but they've always seemed satisfactory. However, the past 3 months have made me beyond furious and have never wanted to move more than now.

BTW, it is only 30 minutes from where I live now. Still on LI, unfortunately. Sadly, given our work, we cannot leave NY until we retire.

In normal circumstances, I would say that the kids will be fine. We moved when my daughter was at the end of 4th Grade. She adjusted really well. But, she was in class with the kids and was able get to know them.

In this strange time, I really don't know what the best thing to do is. I'd probably just stay for now. The districts have been hit-or-miss with distance learning. I'm in one of the top districts and they were just so-so with the distance learning, IMO. There's no guarantee that the new district will be much better. Good luck!

We moved. My kids cried. Guess what, due to technology they are still friends with their old friends and have actually made a lot more friends at their new school. They think it’s “cool” to have friends from different schools. Some of their close friends from their old school ended up moving too.

Torn and considering a move....but what about kids?

No advice but wanted to say I’m going through the same thing. I am done with the city and want to give my kids a better school experience. Plus, my zoned middle and high schools are definitely not ideal. We’re looking but inventory has been low so I’m hoping to find something within the next year. DS is so painfully shy and I’m terrified of uprooting him. He has firmly said he doesn’t want to move, no matter how big of a backyard we will have (our current backyard is tiny so that’s out selling point to him).
I think the only silver lining is this online learning, hoping somehow him not being around his school and friends for a year will help the transition when we do .
I wish we made the move when he was younger! Best of luck to you and your family.

I would not base my decision on moving on crisis schooling.

Do you like your current house, neighbors, location? If so, I’d stay put. If remote learning continues/resumes next year, expectations will be different. Teachers is my district are pushing for it to be more rigorous as the fourth quarter was a joke because the grades literally didn’t count.

I agree. And eventually it's going to go back to normal. It isn't going to be like this forever

If you were considering moving out the state then maybe but to move 30 minutes. I would wait and see how things pan out, maybe move after a semester If they are remote learning. See what your district does next year.

As for your kids they will be fine with a move. I mean if we are still remote learning, how much will the kids be seeing their friends any way and you’re talking about 30 minutes away. That isn’t really far.

This.

I was disappointed with our district's online learning as well but, it looks like they are making efforts to improve it going forward.

Totally agree. This is not going to be a long term thing.
If you are happy where you are , stay!

I agree. I think all of the schools were blindsided by this. If you were happy with the schools pre-covid I would reconsider moving. Wait till September and see what happens...
