Did you have to have base installed and then contractor come back at later date to have asphalt installed?

Yes, it was weeks for everything to get packed down. Mine was like that and I frequently see that walking through my neighborhood

Yes, they told us to use the driveway (without the asphalt) for a few weeks to pack everything down. I tried to run over every inch of it with my truck to make sure it was smushed down really well. It really annoyed me because they didn't tell me that before they started the job, but it is what it is. I have to say it's really held up. It's been over 12 years and the driveway still looks amazing (except for the few small oil stains that came from my husbands old muscle car). No cracks or holes or anything. I know I should probably have it sealed soon, but it doesn't even look like it needs it.

We were originally told we would have to wait about 2 weeks for everything to be packed down. We were replacing a horrible driveway. When they ripped it up and ran the first rollers over it, they said there was no need to wait....we were as compact as it was going to be.

Mine was several weeks between having the base layer installed and the final asphalt

Yup, that's normal. Exception is if you do pavers, those can go down right away.
