I think the church needs to evolve to survive. They can't keep holding on to these ancient ideals and beliefs from hundreds and thousands of years ago.
It's good to finally see a pope who recognizes that.

Agreed. I've loved the shake up the Pope has been working on the past few years. I'm hoping that his forward thinking will finally help others to stop the hate that's been so consuming for so long.

It’s a step in the right direction but it’s only recognizing civil unions. This is not a marriage in the eyes of the church.

OK, I don't think that the article is saying that. I read it as he was talking about law in general, not church law.

So lovely. I think this pope is wonderful. Now can he just say abortions in some cases like when the mother’s life is in danger or she was raped are okay, would go such a long way to helping society.

I agree. He was just talking about civil law. It will take a LOOONG TIME for the Church to permit same-sex marriage.

No it's not. What a horrible, backward attitude towards Catholics. Most of us in the year 2020 are fairly progressive.
I totally get that there are a lot of Catholics that are not bothered by this, but not sure if I’d say most. The other day my Aunt shared a meme from some Facebook group that said “raise your hand if you believe marriage should only be between a man & a woman”. SO many people replied saying “I agree”. I was pretty shocked to be honest. And I know that that Facebook group is not the best example & maybe not the majority, but there were a lot of people chiming in. It was sad to see.

This is exactly what I see on my mom's page and all her friend's pages.
I think that the younger generation is more progressive, but there are definitely a LOT of people in my mom's generation that will be quite upset about it because of antiquated ideas that have been drilled into their heads during their formative years.

And agreed. There are so many [catholic] people I know that would not take this so well because of the antiquated views drilled into them their whole lives.

I'm glad to hear about this step in the right direction, certainly still improvements to make, but I hope we're on the right track.
I am Catholic, and I am, and have always been, supportive of same-sex marriage. I do not know any Catholics who are against same-sex marriage. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I think it is fair to say that the majority of Catholics, in 2020, are supportive of same-sex marriage and disagree with the church's stance.

Same! Obviously there are going to be many devout and old school Catholics just like there are still many racists in the world. But I do believe the pendulum has swung to other side and there are a lot more progressive Catholics and ways of thinking. My son goes to a progressive catholic school.
