show the corny coworker some love

if your company ever puts together a cheesy/corny activity to boost morale... for the love of all that is holy, show some love to the person who put it together. these silly things take a ton of work!!!

LOL, sorry, I hate those things and find it an utter and complete waste of time. I'm not in kindergarten, I do not understand how a major corporation like yours thinks this is any way appropriate. But I understand it is part of your job....I could never do it! But then again I'm Scrooge because I told them that if they went ahead with their Thanksgiving Potluck, 25 of us in a 14x14 room for two hours, I would report them to the DOH!!!!

Finally a good way to get out of the office potluck!
I'm a scrooge as well.
They always joke that I "don't play the reindeer games".
I just can't. It's just not in me.

Culture is a big part of modern day workplaces. Maybe it’s not your thing but it’s important to many people. There’s a lot of studies on how engagement drives real business results and lack of engagement comes at huge costs.

While it may be corny for some, others find it fun and it adds a bit of lightheartedness to stressful work situations. Many of these activities break down organizational norms and help people build or strengthen relationships which can make someone more effective or productive in their job.

I know OP works in a more blue collar environment and I can tell you some fun and smiles go a long way to brighten people’s spirits. I worked in a warehouse for a while and we constantly had little contests and fun ways of making a sometimes dreary job a bit more tolerable.

So I appreciate you OP and I bet most of your employees do to. Always be open to feedback though as fun is not a one size fits all equation :)

I agree on a potluck during a pandemic. That would be a no go for me.

I don't either, I have friends and family to have fun with. Ironically, our General Manager who was pushing to have this huge Thanksgiving in the office was diagnosed with Covid today, along with another co-worker.

I am not a joiner by any stretch of the imagination, but I can certainly appreciate the effort it takes to organize these events and would absolutely participate to show my support for my colleagues.

MK, I'm sure the scavenger hunt will a lot of fun. Your coworkers are lucky to have you!

Re: show the corny coworker some love

my last job tried to hard ( in a small office) when new boss started. So many freaking pot lucks.

i opted out of a book secret santa a few years a go ( way too hard- I can't even keep track of what I books my husband has already read) but the next year we did a yankee swap, that actually turned out to be a lot of fun.

The key for me, was if there was little effort required of us. buy a $10 generic gift- fine-- cook something at home, after a 9 houtr work, day, 90 minute commute & making actual dinner, then lug into to to work & make room in a mini fridge, no thank you.

so, sorry you are the one that has to do all the work for this--Im sure the staff will enjoy it

Re: show the corny coworker some love

You are very sweet to be putting this together and really putting your heart in it.
I work in a VERY small office and while most of the time I love to be alone, sometimes I miss the dynamics of a big office.
If anything were to happen at this current job and I had to leave, I would look for a job at a big company for sure.

Re: show the corny coworker some love

I think the issue too is who you work with.

While I love my small team- and we hang out after work for Happy Hours, vendor dinners, we have lunches etc, there are a lot of people in my office who are not nice at best.

Phony, catty, grown ass women acting like High School girls, etc.

And the group that organizes all these office events are the worst ones.

So I have a hard time participating in anything they put together because I really can't stand them.

Re: show the corny coworker some love

thanks for all the comments on both side of the equation. it's always a good reminder to know that this stuff isn't for everyone.

yes, i've been in companies where these events sucked the life out of you... along the lines of what Nel said. and i've been in places where these events are total fun.

it all varies and i know it's not for everyone. that's why whenever i put one of these together it's COMPLETELY voluntary.

PS. ON THE FOOD FRONT - in the stations, we don't do pot lucks. the company just provides one meal per week every week during the peak season... for everyone. it's one of the small things we do for the dock workers. let's face it, they do the hard work. Chat Icon

I’d participate cause of the effort put in by someone who didn’t have to and because I don’t mind those silly games at all. Same with weddings, I might be in the minority but I enjoy the throwing of the bouquet, the garter, all those silly things.

Re: show the corny coworker some love

I think it's really nice of you to put so much thought into and to go above and beyond when creating events for your coworkers. I'm sure it's very appreciated. I probably wouldn't participate because it's usually not my thing. I know you have no control over this and are just doing your job, but I've always been of the mindset that if an employer really wanted to show appreciation for their employees' hard work they would pay them their worth instead of creating silly events like watered down margarita Mondays and wasting money on cocktail umbrellas, grass skirts, and trinkets and potluck lunches. Thanks, but no thanks. Most of these people don't even wash their hands after using the toilet no matter how many signs are posted. I'm not eating anything they make. So yeah, the fastest way to boost morale (for me at least) is to boost my paycheck lol.

And this may not be the nature of your field or the positions you create these events for, but in my experience at one particular previous job, I was tied to my desk and wouldn't have been able to get away for a minute to see what the fuss of yankee swap was about even if I wanted to. I would have returned to 600 emergency voicemails and 2000 urgent emails. Not all jobs are equal and nothing makes it more glaringly obvious as all your coworkers doing a conga line, the electric slide, or scavenger hunt around the office while you're busy putting out the 50th fire of the day with any number of problem accounts, trying to save the company losing beaucoup dollars, and haven't had time for lunch or a bathroom break all day. In that job, no, I wouldn't have appreciated the event you created because it would have made me feel even worse about my job. Sorry, but it's the truth. Many times I was like "well, I guess I'm not appreciated since I can't attend any of the silly appreciation week events" lol where were they showing me and all the other trapped suicidal employees like me any love, kwim? My paycheck is still crap AND I don't get to eat any of Sally's pubic hair cookies?? Lol not fair. This has to be an HR violation. Maybe I wanted to do the cha cha slide in the break room or sing along to the Grease soundtrack or Elton John's greatest hits on karaoke too, but will they ever know my mad cha cha slide skills??
