Gift question... teachers and others
So this is the first year my oldest is in Middle School. He has SOOOO many teachers. Do you get for the middle school teachers?
My 4th grader is still easy with 2 teachers only and of course I get for bus drivers.
Thinking for my hair stylist getting a really nice wine tumbler made for her and a bottle of wine. I also give a nice tip as well. SHe does mine and my 2 boys and she is also my oldest son's BFF mom.
Our garbage guy never gets out of the truck and really doesn't care for our block bc half the time the cans are on the ground. LOL In NJ we have private companies so pay to get garbage picked up. Our fav mailman recently left (for a better route I found out closer to his home) and we haven't had the same person come. It's usually a few different people. Now with Covid I don't go out much. My waxer girl left and the groomers shut down! I haven't even go for a mani/pedi since summer and been doing it myself. Ugh! What a crazy year! Oh, and we do a bunch of charities usually through the school collecting.

Nope, nothing for middle and high school unless your child worked with someone on a one on one basis. It was so nice to get to that point where the gifts lightened up.

Re: Gift question... teachers and others
I teach HS and get a gift here or there. I would say if your son has a favorite teacher or a teacher that has gone above and beyond, it is a nice sentiment, but not required.
This year I think the only gifts I am giving are for my DS' teacher and TA. He no longer takes the bus or no longer goes to before and after care so there is no one else.
As for mailman and garbage man, I have never tipped them. Our mail route has a new mailman at least 3 times a year. Our garbage is through a private company and the trucks have the arm so they never get out of the truck.

No middle school teacher gifts unless someone has gone out of your way for your child. I normally give to my mail man but after my checks were stolen this year I am no longer giving them a present. It was a felony and the police pressed charges against the carrier. So instead of my usual gifts to my usual people I donated to food charities in my community.

That's the same here. He never gets out and has the big arm.

Gift question... teachers and others
For 5th grade in middle school here they have 2 teachers for most of the day for the full year (one teaches ELA and SS and a special every other day and the other teaches Math, science and a special every other day) so I got a gift for them since DS is with them most of the day. If he had separate teachers for each period - I wouldn't have.
I don't usually give anything more than a larger tip to my hair person and it's not likely that I will see her over the holidays.
I give money to the garbage men and mailmen and usually the recycling guys leave a card - I give them the least as they come once a week, throw my cans in the street and are town employess.

I wouldn't give gifts to individual teachers if your son changes classes throughout the day
For the garbage men - they do get out of the truck to empty the pails - I give them $20 each. They are really good about placing my garbage can back on my driveway, with the lid inside the pail so it won't blow away and they have been really good about taking big items and stuff like that, so I am fine with doing that
I also give the mailman $20 - can't say he goes above and beyond, but I don't have any complaints, and I feel like it's the right thing to do.
If I see my hairstylist any time around the holidays, I give her a bigger tip. I don't have a regular manicure/pedi person, but whoever does my nails, if I go around the holidays, I give them a bigger tip too.

Re: Gift question... teachers and others
My DS is fully remote in Middle School, and most kids are hybrid. I hear everything that goes on in his classes all day, and I am beyond impressed with the way the teachers are managing the kids at school and the kids online simultaneously. They have gone out of their way to engage and involve both groups, and give all of them an opportunity to participate. I did not expect to give gifts once my kids started MS, but I have to say, I feel like every one of these teachers deserves it! At the very least, I may gift the 5 teachers he sees every day. I just want them to know how much they are appreciated.

Once my kids went to middle, and then high school I didn’t give individual gifts, but I send a cookie basket to the staff for the holiday season and a edible arrangement type fruit fruit platter in June.

Re: Gift question... teachers and others
My daughter is in middle school, I am not doing teacher gifts. I feel like teacher gifts is an elementary level thing since those teachers are with your kids all day, every day.

Gift question... teachers and others
My husband is a middle school teacher and rarely gets holiday gifts- once in a while a box of chocolate or something small. At the end of the year, he may get a few more gifts- mostly from students that he really helped. My DD is in middle school and since we are only in person once a week she hasn't really formed any bond with any teacher in particular this year. Last year she had 1 really favorite teacher and she wanted to give something to her. We gave a small gift card.

Gift question... teachers and others
Last year in Jr. High we did not do gifts. There are just too many teachers. This year though because of Covid, all our teachers are doing so great we are giving everyone a little something. Counting my daughter in 5th grade (in a special ed class with aides and therapists), it is 27 teachers. I'm f'ing nuts lol.

Re: Gift question... teachers and others
My daughter is in middle school and we gift her favorite teachers. When my son was in middle and high, I did gifts for every teacher and person he worked with (he had a ton, but also has special needs).
This year, my daughter is in the same classroom all day with 9 other students, the teachers come in each period, so they are trying to pool money for certain teachers to get stuff she said. One of her teachers really stands out. She is always happy, cheerful, encouraging, and had the kids decorate the classroom for the season, which was nice since they look at the same 4 walls all day.
