Unhappy with school district

This past summer, we moved to a new district, largely for the purpose of DD starting kindergarten here. The school district is supposed to be excellent.

However, their response to COVID has been abysmally bad. When the children are in school (which DD hasn't been for over a month) they are in person for 2 hours and remote the rest of the day. The district never attempted to submit a full in person plan to the state- they are not utilizing any of the vast space (2 auditoriums, a huge "multi-purpose" room and the cafeteria) available to properly distance the children. They didn't even try.

I'm truly disgusted and this cannot continue. Their job is to educate the children in the district and they are not even attempting to do this in any meaningful way.

I know the logical thing here is to say things will go back to normal eventually, but I'm really not sure. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they try to pull this crap again next year.

What is the most effective way to see change happen? I have no power and it is clear to me that the politics are insane. Do I just suck it up? Is that the answer? I have no idea how any of this works. I went to catholic school so whenever there was a problem, the parents would complain and whatever the issue would be fixed. I'm out of my element for sure.

Talk to other parents, I’m sure there are many that feel the same way. One parent might not be able to make a difference but a big group can. Meet with the superintendent, multiple times if necessary. Press him to start a plan where kids can start going to school full time pointing out the extra spaces they have. Be vocal about the issue in ur local mom group, gather signatures, call and meet with the superintendent til they provide a solid plan for getting kids back in school. It can be done.

I have never heard of a district doing this for Kindergarten especially. This sounds mismanaged. My daugher is in highly rated district and its full day in person for all elementary school students with option of full remote. I would discuss with PTA possibly.

Same it’s happening in the district where I live, and it’s a big district with several elementary schools.

I would do this. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

We are currently all remote and have been remote since 11/24. We go back to our hybrid model - k-2 go 4 days, 3-12 go 2 days, on Monday. There is no plan to change it but parents are really complaining. And although nothing has been publicly done - things are being discussed internally.

I agree. You need to rally other parents. You need to make noise, with respect of course. Meet with the superintendent, meet with the President of your PTA Council. Talk to your PTA. Start a petition. Then you need to go to your BOE and be prepared to speak at one of their meetings. That way you are in a public forum that records the minutes of the meeting. When you speak, make sure you have specifics. Find out the square footage of the classrooms to see if you can social distance. Find out their cleaning protocol. Find out what types of air filters they are using. Find out how many children are in a class. Good luck!!

Talk with other parents. Speak up at BOE meetings. Have others who have the same concerns attend the meetings as well. Email the superintendent and building principals.

My Godson's school is like that-- he is in 3rd, and their hybrid plan is a few hours a day instead of full days a few days a week.

I think the only way to effect change is to rally many, many parents in the district and complain daily. Use social media, phone calls, letters, etc. It ultimately depends on the BOE and the influence of the teacher's union on the BOE. Everything is political, unfortunately.

I'm surprised! Not even one day remote? No teachers have had to quarantine? I get emails daily about who has gotten COVID and who has had to quarantine. There have been days the entire school has been shut down or classes. My DC had to go remote for one week for a bus exposure. I thought this was happening everywhere.

Neither one of my girls have been remote all year either. There have been some kids/teachers that needed to quarantine but never the entire school.

Nope! Not one.
People have had to quarantine and go remote for 10 days or whatever and there have been positive cases but never whole classes. My daughter has never been deemed a close contact of anyone who had it so she hasn't been remote at all since September.

Jealous!

DS 1 has gone 16 days in person this year and DS 2 has gone 19 (he should’ve went 20 but we took them away).

They are heading back tomorrow but I’m anticipating DS 1 going for 2 days in Jan before they shut the school down since everyone in the classroom at any point of the day with the positive case has to quarantine. And we are in a yellow zone so I’m anticipating asymptomatic positives.

Nope. Anytime there has been a case in a class, whether its a student or teacher, they only quarantine that class not the whole school. My district is doing a really good job. No complaints. Some all remote kids are actually coming back to class too because its better to be at the school then at home and they finally got the option to come back.

Thanks all. I could try the BOE. I don't know any of the parents to rally. It's mostly nannies at pickup and drop off. The two moms I do know think the whole situation is a disaster and have said they were considering leaving the district. I have no way to gauge how anyone else feels.

The PTA has basically no presence beyond sending an email about a t-shirt sale and then not showing up to said t-shirt sale. So, not hopeful there.

Do you have a town mom or neighborhood Facebook page? That's where the troops are really rallied in my town. If that was the case in my town and one mom posted a complaint like you, you would probably have 200 parents supporting you in an hour.
