Has anyone given themselves a haircut? UPDATE.
Have you?
I’m desperate for a haircut. It has been a year. I used to get a haircut about 2 times a year, but this year was difficult obviously. I gave in and have been doing box dyes, so I’m happy with that. It hasn’t really bothered me until recently and now I don’t know at this rate when I can go again.
Any YouTube videos? I don’t want to buy special scissors or anything. I tend to keep my hair back because I’m at home most of the time— nowhere to go really. I have straight, long hair.
TIA.
Update: Well I bought scissors and I can see how they make a difference. I followed a YouTube tutorial https://youtu.be/BPS3Ts_bZVI that was similar to my hair. It worked fine. I’m happy and it looks healthier. It was getting really thin at the ends and it was driving me crazy. I took off about 3 inches. It should do me until I can get myself into a hairdresser to get it done correctly. Luckily it isn’t a complex cut or anything.
Thanks everyone for your tips!

Yes I cut my own hair (but I went to hair school and worked in a salon) you definitely can do this if your hair is long but you will need cutting shears. You can't use the same scissors that cut paper

Re: Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
Nothing major. A little bit when it was getting too long and wasn't planning to go yet. The hairdresser always knows though so I usually admit it before she starts
I am sure youtube has some videos especially during the pandemic and more not being able to get out for a haircut.
Hubby hasn't gotten a haircut since way before the pandemic. His friend will just buzz his hair. Boys are so much easier.

Interesting. Is it only for curly hair because I only came across videos that it is used for curly hair.

Do you have any shears you would recommend?
I have no idea about this stuff and I don’t want to spend more than 15-20.

I also want to add that I am tempted to just cut and chop without thinking...

i have curly hair, but every time i given myself a unicorn hair cut has been during the times when i'm blowing it straight every day.
honestly, i wouldn't do it with my hair actively curly. i'm afraid a curl wouldn't lay straight and then i have wonky hair when i let it all down lol

Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
Back in April or so I did. I have pin straight hair. I put it in two, even, tight, low pigtails and basically chopped a few inches. Then kind of cleaned up any pieces that really stood out. Truthfully it was fine for what I needed at that time (I was desperate - my hair was just getting long and gross).

Re: Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
I've been cutting my own hair long before covid. I'm just never happy with the cut I get from a stylist so I decided to try my hand at cutting it myself.
You should definitely buy specialized haircutting shears. You'll damage your hair cuticle and give yourself split ends if you use regular scissors. They even sell hair cutting clips with a carpenter level in them so you give yourself a straight cut. It's basically a cutting guide. There are a lot of YouTube tutorials. Just search for whatever cut you're looking to do (diy bob, diy trim, diy layers, etc. ) and look for the one that seems easiest and looks best. (You'll see some people on YT cutting their hair with regular scissors steer clear). There are a bunch of professional stylists with their own YT channel to guide you too.

Re: Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
Tough to tell just by the pictures. I buy equinox shears on Amazon they are affordable and decent. I used them to cut clients hair when I worked at the salon. I get the 5.5 inch because I have small hands lol

Re: Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
I finally let my husband cut my hair. I’ve been cutting my husband, son and daughter’s hair. I have actually gotten good at it. Who knew I had secret skills? Haha. My husband says I am his hairdresser and would rather I do it than go to a barber even after covid is done.

SO won’t let me near his hair. He looks like a has a lego man helmet haircut. And he’s a ginger, so more noticeable. Maybe after I get the shears, he’ll let me near it.

OK, I think out of those two I’ll go with the one with the best reviews. It’s 6 inches and it has micro teeth on one side. Whatever that means.
What a relief my question wasn’t that crazy.

OMG never and I never would. I have really thick hair and most hair dressers don't even know how to cut it. Many of the salons here offer outdoor haircuts. Maybe you could find something similar there?

Re: Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
I get the buzzer out and usually do about 3/4" length. 5 minutes and I'm all good.
I've done DS's as well. I keep offering to do the same haircut for DD but she keeps turning me down...

I wish. Way too many regulations that wouldn’t allow it. Plus we just had a lot of snow. Good idea, though.

I cut mine all the time. I watched a few tutorials, I have my own cutting scissors and all. I cut my kids hair and theirs looks professional mine, I think mine is ok, I get tons of compliments but I can’t wait to go somewhere and get my highlights and a fresh cut!

Has anyone given themselves a haircut?
Yes twice lol! I’m getting good now! Also did for my mom recently after she had the hairdresser come to the house (when that was the in thing) in June, and she barely cut anything. It’s actually fun. I’m only willing to try a woman’s hair cut, definitely not a man’s. Have to work on my skills first haha!
